Whats a good 22lr round for bunnies, target?

clueless as per where to start. I plan to pick up a few boxes and see what groups where at 50 yards with my CZ452.



But as far as what hits bunnies hard I dont know where to start. Also- suggestions for decent cheap target rounds for practice?
 
Pretty much any hi-vel hollowpoint will work for the bunnies, you'll have to figure out which one your rifle likes.
Personally, I've had great results with the CCI 0064 "Quik-Shok". It's mid-priced ammo, so you can even afford to plink with it, some.
I'm also had great results form the CCI 0074, "Segmented Hollow Point" it is a "pre-fragmented" subsonic hollowpoint. It's quite accurate in my rifle, giving me groups around 3" at 100m. The 0074 is great for (legal) shooting close to dwellings or livestock, its very quiet and smacks the marmots I've used it on, pretty hard.
 
All my CZs seem to like CCI in general(not the blazers) and fiocci std vel also. I've found for the cheap stuff that winchester dynapoint(white box)works best for the price in them. CCI std vel seemed to group the best overall with 36gr minimags doing really good sometimes, and decent others. Only 2 of my CZs did good with stinger/segmented/velocitors.
 
Just make sure you don't sight in with a cheap ammunition then try hunting with another ammunition. You can't go wrong with CCI! I use Blazer for plinking and have had great results.
 
Any decent hollowpoint will anchor bunnies with ease. If you want to kill them even deader, then spend the extra money for Stingers, Velocitors, Yellow Jackets and so on. All of those ones go much faster and kill bunnies deader.

My savages seem to like blazers, just they get gummed up to the point of FTE quickly. I found changing the extractors with the similar lakefield mk2 ones seemed to tension the spring enough to work better(needs a little filing to be flush with the OD of the bolt)
 
My old Lake Field Mossberg Mark II loves the Winchester Super X power points. They are a 40gr and rated on the box for 1280fps. A little pricey up here in Canada at around $8.50/100.
My first and last bulk pack purchase was: Winchester Xpert hv I think they were. They were a grey lead tip and didn`t shoot anywhere near the super x`s. I didn`t even like using them on gophers.
 
CCI SV for target and CCI Mini-Mag HP's for bunnies. <----- that's a period.

Truth be told anything works on bunnies when you are shooting eyeballs... for that use what is most accurate (HP or not). I have shot hundreds of snowshoe hares with Sheridan C9 .20 caliber pellet guns with a 14.3 grain pellet... never lost one (puts the .22 LR ammo in perspective).

Then shoot whatever cycles reliably, and shoots adequately. Punch a hole in a bunny, and he's ingredients, provided you do your part with shot placement. Round nose works fine, hollow points too, if they shoot for you, but I didn't like the mess they made when you ran one through the body.

Lousy hits with hollow points make a mess of your hassenfefer! But the bunny will still make good time going cross country.

In real world terms, aim for the head. Makes for a nice, clean carcass, that looks good on the plate. Easy to deal with, too, as the common range for the ones I got while hunting with Brutus, was 10 yards or less, and the bush being as thick as it was, running shots were hardly ever an option.
The ones I shot were generally sitting as still as they could, relying on their camo to take care of them, until I was inside their 'comfort' distance, anyway. Their distance was short!

I used Winchester 333 or 555 bulk boxes, Wildcats, Blazer, or whatever else I could stock up on for cheap. It all worked.

I have used American Eagle HP made by Federal in every .22 I have owned.

From the Holy Grail of a Sako Fin Fire to my several CZ's and all have shot to minute of gopher to 60 yrds.
I shoot at a gravel pit with known distances and have set up nickles, bottle caps, shot shell hulls and fined tuned the scope and shooting skills to these targets.

Using those hyper velocity 'Stingers' the difference has been a higher point of impact and I could adjust accordingly.
CCI Quick Shok was mentioned and it to is devastating on gophers and I would not hesitate to use it on bunnies(head shots) but would recommend some trigger time with those as well.

^True words indeed. It does not take much hitting power to kill a bunny. Especially at the regular hunting distances mentioned here by Trevj.
 
cool- this aint too ovewhelming it seems :). Good to have some brand names so I can grab a party pack of a ton of ammo and try em out at the range while I hone my ability to deliver instant bunny death. 22lr= the best
 
I guess it goes unsaid that we all are assuming that we are discussing rifle hunting of snowshoehares or nutall's cottontail rabbits?
In the more open & grassy areas of Alberta, the jackrabbit is more likely to be cleanly harvested with magnum rimfires or small bore centrefires.

The most accurate ones you can afford, then shoot for the head.

Seriously, I've killed eastern cottontails with .22 pelletguns many times. You don't need much power at all.
