Going to get into Coyote hunting on a ranch in Southern Alta near Medicine Hat and was wondering what would be a good coyote call to buy. Not interested in electronic calling just want a good quality hand call.

Is the traditional dying rabbit call still the most effective one to buy? and if so what is a good brand and from where can you pick one up?

Think any of the rabbit calls will work for you. Got a couple of brands, none seem to be better than the others. Lot of guys out there calling and it doesn't take much to educate them though.

I like the open reed Dan Thompson red desert howler. You can do most any call with it. Rabbit distress, hurt pup, howl, barks, elk.....
I also use the E. L. K. Howler for a good howler. It is pretty easy to use without learning a lot and practicing forever.

The open reed are harder to master but they don't freeze quickly like a closed reed.

I use a yellerdog cow horn howler and synthetic open reed call. Excellent calls. You can make any kind of sound you want with them

Speaking of Coyotes....I been out 5 times since I started my vacation.....not one dog came to the calls. Even the magpies are not coming, I find that strange. Last year as soon as you hit the call, the magpies would show, followed by a coyote. I'm thinking due to the warm weather they are not moving much. Anyone else getting any?

I have Kerry's rubber set of calls, awesome set and have bought others from him for the collection. I just double checked his web site and everything appears to be up and running? Tried adding a call to my cart and it worked fine? :)

Glad to hear that... I just went into the site and ordered the rubber set.... looking forward to their arrival.
Carver Predator Calls=great products for sure

Another vote for carver calls, the swift is my favorite closed reed but the open reed are truly fantastic. My daughter (4 years old at the time) loved honking on the calls so much that I ordered a purple burl call and mentioned it was for her. He asked her name so I told him. He carved her name into the call (closed reed cotton tail) before adding the finish. Really amazing guy. If electric is your thing, the fox pro pup in distress is one of the hottest calls I've used. Gets entire packs in an uproar and coming in hot.
