I live on vancouver island and am preparing for my first year hunting. (next year). Any opions on a good island deer rifle would be much appreiciated.
I currently have my eye on a savage 300winmag. that way i have the option to go to the mainland for moose.
thanks.

A 300 win mag would work...might be a tad overkill for our tiny island deer which is why I sold mine, but one can reload it to a lighter load and have the versatility of loading it more to original spec for the moose.

I have a .243 for Island deer and also use a 30-06 from time to time.

If your going to get 1 multipurpose gun I would go with a 30-06 lots of different rounds to choose from!

If you hit an Island deer with it... its going down!

Best 'Island Gun'.

This will be my fourth season of hunting on the 'rock', and I really think that an over and under 12g and 30.06 (or smaller) combination gun would work well.

As the deer are modest in size, and the grouse unpredictable, this type of gun would work well. Even yesterday's hunt proved the point. Armed with a 30.06 I saw no deer, but flushed 5 grouse!

If you are looking just for a deer gun, I'd go .270 for the island. If you want a single rifle for all that BC has to offer, 30.06 would be my preference.

Vancouver island blacktails are not large animals by any standard so a .300 Win magnum is way more gun than needed. You mentioned mainland moose also in your OP so the .300 would be near perfect. My suggestion if you want to use only one gun, go with the 30/06, IMHO.

Primarily Island hunting (poodle deer and black bear) with the odd trip for Elk & Moose.... take into account new hunter, most likely new shooter as well?

As already mentioned get a 30-06...

If your not a reloader ammo is available everywhere and it is not overkill on island deer and with the right bullet will work very well on any moose you ever encounter plus the recoil is very manageable...

:)

You mention moose but there are large Roosevelt elk on the Island. Plus there are some large black bear. .30-06 is all you need if it is only one gun . . . Yeah . . . right!

Any word on who is holding a CORE class? I am a new hunter to the island as well. I hear the 25-06 has a huge following here for our little deer.

I ll make a little different recommendation. I lived in Campbell River for 5 years, I really liked my 30/30 when I was there. In fact, even though i have hunted Alberta for the last 5 years, I still more often then not take my 30/30.
Why you ask? Well for one the bush is real thick on the island, and a 30/30 is easy to carry and to shoot in the thick stuff. Also 30/30 ammo is relatively cheap to buy, so you can practise alot (to make a quick shot if needed) and its sold everywhere so you dont have to worry about finding some.

Also, Marlin makes quite a nice rifle in 3030 and you can get a stainless/laminate model too if you are worried about moisture/rain.

If you are worried about making a longer shot say in a cut block, just put a decent scope on it with some quick detach rings, you can use that when hunting the cutblocks then switch to the iron sights if its raining hard, or you are going into the bush :) a scoped 3030 with a 150 gr will take any island buck alive out to 200 or so yards, which is the range 90% of game is taken anyways.

If you want to try a moose, a 3030 and 170 gr bullets has slain a ton of them so dont worry :)

If you want to buy what everybody and there brother shoots on the island buy a tikka T3 or whatever in 30-06/308/270 buy a scope for it and go to town... but I dont think you would ever feel unhappy with ur trusty 3030 at your side :)

my .02$
