What's a good price on .223 to feed an AR?

I'm just looking for plain Jane 55gr bulk to shoot through my first AR :dancingbanana:. Lowest price I can find is about $0.53/rd before taxes and shipping ($0.63 after T&S) for American Eagle Tactical. Is it worth buying a 1000rd crate at that price? Or is it best to wait for sale?

Thanks!

If you don't reload, then there's a good price from Tenda on sale for $189 per 500 ($0.38/round)
the reason I mentioned reloading is that they are steel cased and hard on dies.

Gary.

Also Xmetal Targets in Canada has reloaded 5.56mm $445/1000rds made in house.
They used to be a CGN vendor until last month?...today I just noticed they are not on the vendor list.

What's every ones opinion on using steel case in their AR?

I bought some of it and it shoots fine. Did some internet research on the steel case apparently it may wear the barrel out earlier. I'm shooting it through an inexpensive $170 or so barrel. With the first 1000 rounds of savings I'm over halfway to a new barrel.

Weird. I think Wolverine carriers their ammo too. If you can find 1000 rounds for under $500 taxes in you are doing well. I remember when our dollar was par paying $375 for 1k of American eagle haha..

only bi-metal bullets do. material of the casing has nothing to do with barrel wear.

For what it is worth, .223 can be reloaded with Campro 55g, 24 grains of CFE223 and 4 cent primers for about 26 cents....assuming the brass is free which it is for me.

Tula and Barnaul are bi-metal. MFS might be. Cheaper steel-case ammo will be the ones with bi-metal projectiles. Except maybe Hornady Steel Match.

Nearly all the cheap steel cased ammo is bi-metal. MFS is too.

I think your correct. The Hornady steel cased stuff is probably the only non bi-metal stuff in Canada.

I shoot steel through guns that I can buy a replacement barrel for (Tavor, AR-15 etc.) But only brass through my SR-15 to help extend barrel life.

I'd suggest to test ammo before buying bulk.
I recently tested some ammo and steel case cheap stuff turned actually better than cheap brass cased ammo. So Tenda's offer $190 for 500 looks good to me :]

That's great as long as your range allows you to shoot it...if you get caught shooting that Barnaul or mfs at my club you get the boot, no warning. Anything that has a projectile that sticks to a magnet is not allowed.

Right, I didn't think about it. Our club's ranges are outdoor and there are no problems with steel ammo.

Be wary when buying reloaded ammo, you only want crimped primers because they can blow out and fall around and jam up your gun if they're not

Is it that big of a deal though if you're not shooting competition?

For general range use it's probably okay or can it damage your rifle?
