whats a good revolver for a newbe?

My .02$
357 Ruger GP 100. This is nice wheel gun which allows you to shoot the smaller 38 which is easier on the wallet and wrists.
I think if you buy a 22 like a smith 617 which I also love, are cheap to run but you will get bored of it quickly, 22's are nice to have but not as a primary range gun, I like things that go boom not pop. 357 will definatly boom.:p

Thanks everyone for the quick responses. As I plan to get into loading my own I am leaning towards the 357/38 just not sure which one. I am hopeing to get to the range in the next few days and speak to some of the guys and hopefully handle some to see what appeals to me.

Forgive me if I misunderstand you...you are aware that you can shoot 38 & 357, from a .357 revolver? You do understand that you can use the same dies for 38 & 357? Same dimensions except the .357 is 1/10th of an inch longer.

I have had a S&W 686 for about 20 years...great gun to shoot. This falls into the "you may as well start out with what you are going to end up with" category.

S&W 17 or 617 if you want to shoot .22 double/single action.

Ruger single six if you want to shoot .22 single action.

S&W 586/686 if you want to shoot .38 Spl &/or .357 Mag double or single action.

Pietta SAA in .357 Mag if you want to shoot .38 Spl &/or .357 Mag single action.
