What's a moderate load for the .375 H&H?

Moose under 300 yards. I don't want to cut them in half but I do want to bangflop them. What do you suggest for a load?

Do you want the moderate load to reduce recoil or lower the meat damage? If the second is the case don't worry about it, you won't be shooting any moose in half with a .375 H&H. Just load up some 270 TSX bullets and live happily ever after.:D My muzzle-loader does more meat damage than that combination, and that was on animals from 150-1000 pounds. My current load is 77 grains of H414 and the bullet seated 30 thou off the lands.It isn't max. Recoil isn't a whole lot more than .300 Win Mag, but the rifle is a couple pounds heavier too.
I've posted this picture before, but it is the exit hole on a zebra shot square through both shoulders with that load. Impala look the same, dead but not mangled. I also included the only 270 grain TSX I ever recovered, picked out of a gemsbuck shot more or less lengthwise. It penetrated 4 feet, expanded 100%and lost next to nothing in weight.

A shooter might want to consider using cast bullets for reduced loads in the .375 Mag., some cast bullets intended for the .38/55 will work well in the .375 with 4759 powder, M.T. Chambers makes many .376" designs including a 335 gr. Spitzer, 235 gr. F.P., 255gr. F.P., and 290gr. Paper Patch! Just make sure you don't try the Machine cast .379" bullets first, they are too big and are usually bevel base and lacking enough grease grooves, cast bullets have been tested to 2500fps. in .375 Mag. and show good results.

X2. I haven't shot game with the 375 H&H, just 'punched' paper but like savagefan that charge with either the 300gr Interlock Hornady B.T.S.P. or the 300gr RN IB Interbond works well accuracy wise.:D
With cast, I've used a 265gr GC, sized 0.377", with 38grs of INR4198, 2050 f/sec. For me, anything 'warmer' than that and accuracy starts to decline so I'll leave the cast loads for plinking.

I have tested 290gr. Cast paper patch bullets to max. loads in the reloading manuals without any problems in .378 Weatherby (2900fps).Similar bullets have been tested to the same vel. in the 30/06 and .308 with success.

You be a better man than I Gunga din. ;) Hard cast linotype, slightly oversize, depending on the caliber, 0.002" - 0.003", anywhere close to that velocity and accuracy is no longer acceptable. To me that is.:) Its definately on the decline.
 
i agree that a hard cast would probably lead and give poor accuracy at .375/.378 velocities, I think the key was the paper patching, I have experimented alot with paper patching in this and bigger cals. and have pushed the upper limits of vel. and got some good results(not all), most were soft cast (30-1).

Somewhat of a side issue, but I have an article I got from a shooting buddy and scanned that you might find interesting. Patching Cast Bullets with Teflon.
