hey guys

my grandfather (78) wants to get back into shooting, he still has his PAL and whatnot, but he destroyed his rotator cuff in his shoulder, he needs a lightweight gun that has REALLY small amount of kick. i was thinking about a .22 for him, he will probly shoot .22 shorts or subsonics

anyone hav a recommendation?>

Really, ANY .22 semi or bolt will have next to zero recoil. On the cheap end, you can get an old Cooey for less than $100, or the TOZ-78 (I THINK!) at Armrus for $100.

Go for a Ruger 10/22 IMHO. It is reliable, accurate and there are a million accessories for it if he wants to make it more "shootable" for himself. It is easily scoped. They aren't that expensive and there are a fair number of used ones around as well.

The thing with the Toz is it's light, more accurate than a $100 gun should ever be, like pretty much any .22 it's low recoil but with mine it's taken a while for the bolt start to smooth out. I've got about 1000 rounds through it now, and it's just getting noticeably better. The bolt might be a bit tight for someone with a shoulder injury as new. That might only be my gun though...

It's $100 to get a Toz from Armrus and try it. Invest in a $50 Bushnell rimfire scope and it becomes a real joy. My only concern would be that the action may take some TLC before someone with a shoulder injury could comfortably work the bolt. If mine is any example the finish may be a little rough. Great little gun though. Get some lower velocity ammo and it'd be like shooting a cap gun. Reliable as heck too. I've fed it 1000 rounds of only the cheapest of .22LR and haven't had a misfire yet. It'll reliably hit a toonie at 50 yards if I do my part (that's the harder part of the equation). I just got confirmation that Armrus has them on sale again and I'm thinking of getting another one (if I can sneak it into the cabinet without the girlfriend catching me).

hes sensitive on my 10/22 which IMO has a lot of kick for a .22 rimfire

If a 10/22 is hurting his shoulder then you need to stay away from rifles, get him a good buckmaster(maybe scope it or so)!!

There are quite a few long barreled pistols that will fill his need to shoot!!

I would have to say and I hate to say it that if a 10/22 is too much recoil then he might be #### out of luck.
Now having said that, I fired some CB longs with mine the other day and they will work as a manual action. No recoil, no sound at all if wearing earplugs and if it is scoped you can even see the bullet hitting it's target. These run around $10/50 rounds.

My only thought would be if regular .22 is bothering him, then the weight of any rifle might be too much. A pistol may also be out of the question. Depending on how well he can move his arms.

I've got a 10/22 with a heavy barrel and a bi-pod. there is no recoil whatso ever. the Heavy barrel is more expencive, but the fun you will have is priceless

cheers

I agree. A 10/22 is likely what you need. They're cheap, hardly any parts, easy to maintain, low recoil. There are also billions of aftermarket parts for them. If recoil is too much, then maybe try a compensator on the barrel. I think you can buy them for about $50 american. Try a GOOGLE search.

Have him try a 10/22 in the store for length first...some guys I know find the stocks abit short, and the rifle is abit lighter then many older .22's available for MUCH less money...hence more recoil.

Then again he could extent the length of the stock by putting a big rifle buttpad on it, and reduce recoil also. :D

Not being funny or anything but try a 600-1000ft/sec pellet gun. You may laugh till you try one, quieter and less kick than a .22 pretty much as accurate for target use at closer distances

I have actually found "high powered" pellet guns to have significant recoil. I have even seen them with recoil pads on them. Plus they are hard as hell to #### if you are not in good chape. It is a different type of recoil but it is a recoil.

Heavier Rifle equals less recoil.
Attach bi pod, and use from a bench or use one of those telescopic shooting sticks for standing if the weight is too much for the shooter (wal-mart sells them). :)

IMO recoil is not a factor with any .22.
That said, I would recommend a small single shot or repeater over a semi.
The bolt cycling on semis has a jarring effect which might be irritating to a really sensitive shoulder.
The lightest recoil is found in heavy match rifles like the Anschutz 54, BRNO #4, or BSA Mk II. These rifles can be fired from a rest and bag with a single fingertip and without contact with the shoulderand still barely move from battery when using match ammo.
I would suggest holding any .22 rifle offhand will cause more pain than the recoil.
A lighter rifle will have a bit of felt recoil, but will be much less painful to hold on target when shooting offhand.
