What's a Savage 99C worth?

I really would like to own a Savage 99 in 7mm-08. I know they're out there but it could take a while to find one. Today, I managed to find a pretty nice 99C in .308. I really wasn't after the .308 but this one is in good condition. How much would the 99C in .308 be worth.? It's in good shape, the forestock has been sanded down, so the stock will need to be sanded also and both refinished to match. Blueing is good, the lever has that brown finish on it. It sports open sights but does have scope mounts on it. The wood is excellent, it has no cracks. I kinda need to know real quick. Thanks.
 
They're listed on this board and most of them run for between $400-$450 but by the condition of the one your describing it sounds more like a $350 rifle.

Condition, condition, condition....

I'm not getting something here. How can you say the forearm has been refinished and so the butt stock needs to be done to so they both match and then say the wood is excellent?:confused:

Savage 99's in 7mm-08 are quite rare and very expensive compared to the same rifle in .308.......collectors want them..

In the USA they go for over $1000 US in good condition to about $ 1600 in top shape....due to "collector" value....

Hope you find a 99 .....you won't regret owning one.......

Yep, they're hard to find but your quoting U.S. prices and thats not the way Savage 99's sell in Canada. Collector 99's in Canada sell for the same prices as shooter grade 99's in the states.

Lets not take the prices up to what our neighbors to the south are paying cause if you watch their auction sites it'll make you cry at what some stunned people will pay for a shot out grey rat, I've seen it happen on one to many occasions.

One thing I do know about hunting for 99's in Canada is that if one is over priced, wave and say good bye cause another will always turn up.
 
theres nothing wrong with a .308 i have a 99-c in in about the same condition as you, its not worth anymore than $300 in that shape, i redid mine looks like new now, i have shot it a bit its a lot better gun than there given credit for, send email address i will send pics if you want ,wade
 
Why would it require a new barrel, last I checked a 7mm-08 is just a necked down .308 or a necked up 243, as 243 is a 6mm, all you are doing is getting the barrel bored out to 7mm, check out the case dimensions if ya don't trust me. No new barrel required, get a shooter grade 99 C in 243 and spend the 100-150 to get the bore opened up. Les

Well let me tell ya buddy, when you first started collecting and making some of the buys that you did, I did question the mental capabilities you had. I wondered if you worked while wearing a hockey helmet but unlike the new guys we've got "trying" to collect over there now, at least you stopped talking long enough to listen and learned a thing or two!;)
 
I only wear the Hockey helmet when I am on some of the other sites I hang out in, Other than that, I wear my tinfoil hat, you have to down here, keeps the gubbermint out of my thoughts. :D :D Have you seen the buys that the one new guy has made, methinks he needs to be wearing a hockey hemet. Makes me look some-what even keeled. :D Les
 
Guys, guys, simmer down....you don't just open a bore(barrel)...it requires a rebore and this is expensive if you can find someone to do it, rebore and chamber that rifle will cost you more than the rifle is worth, if the gun has sentimental value or something go for it, but you still have to find someone willing/able to rebore barrel.
 
Reboring isn't really that bad in cost, and you really shouldn't have to get it rechambered, check the case dimensions, all that is required would be the rebore and maybe run a reamer in there to clean it up a bit. I can get a barrel rebored down here for less than 150, now you add in a rechamber and it gets costly. This is why I own chamber reamers for every caliber I shoot. Not upset here, just stating the things I have talked with my gunsmith about. Les
 
I'm not upset, if fact I've got a 358 rotor for a 99 sitting right beside me, thinking about getting a cheap model E and doing it up as a winter project, but your right, you can't just rebore on the 99, the rotor needs to be switched as well. Been through a thousand threads where guys think they can just rebore their 308 out to 358 without changing any of the guts inside it.

Steve used to have a bunch of 358 and 7mm-08 barrels but sold them out to Numrich before he retired a few months ago, now it'll be a ##### trying to get them across the border, Steve never had a problem with it but Numrich does. I'll probably never order anything from them again in my life.
 
See, that is why I would use a 99 C Joe, I consider them truck guns anyway, I have more respect for E's than C' unless it is a claiber that is hard to find i.e. 22-250, 7mm-08, or 284 Win. Other than the C, I won't bubba 99's. Les
 
Ok, I've made up my mind. The fellow is asking $375.00 for the C. It is in .308 and I want a 7-08. I could offer him $300.00 I guess, but I'm not a collector, so the gun will have to go if and when I find a 7-08. So, I'll just wait it out and get what I really want, maybe at the gun show at Easter. I appreciate the suggestion, but I'm not interested in boring out a .243, besides wouldn't it be just as hard to find one as a 7-08?
 
Reboring a 243 to 7mm-08 is just that simple. I really don't understand where the idea that it is hard to find someone to do it, or that it is expensive comes from.

I have had quite a few barrels rebored and rechambered. They always shot at least as well as the original barrel, usually better.

The cost today to have one done here in Canada is around $250-$275. Try getting a Model 99 rebarrelled and see what that costs! :rolleyes: You will be very lucky to get it done for twice that price. There is a lot of work fitting a barrel to a model 99.

Joe can correct me, but I am pretty sure that the 243, 7mm-08 and 308 all use the same rotor. I know the 358 rotor is different, but I also know of at least one 308 that was rebored to 358 and worked just fine with the original rotor.

I would find a 243, send it to Ron Smith to have it rebored to 7mm-08, and go shooting. :D
