I've never hunted before and am interested in trying it out in the next year.

Two questions:

-What critters come into season and when?

-What could I take with .22LR, 7.62*39 or 8mm Mauser?

Thanks men.

Whats available to hunt on Van Island

Go to Canadian tire or any sporting goods store and pick up a copy of the Hunting and Trapping reg's, read it frount to back, the seasons, species and bag limits are listed there.
Van isl has Black tail deer and some of the finest black bear anywhere.
Baggin a good size 3 or 4 point Is the goal, 2 points are common enough,
but consider a 4 point a island trofy, there pretty darn cagey by then.
I like my 30/06 single shot with 150 grain core lote.
Your 8mm should do nicly

There's lot's of chickens there too. When I lived in Port Hardy, there were lots of nice blackie bucks to be had, and lots of rich yanks came up to Hardy for the bear hunting, some bigguns there.

Wow what a solid group of responses since making this post this morning. Thanks guys i'll check out all these links!

PS - Blacktail I don't know what CORE is yet but i imagine ill find out soon enough once i begin reading all this data you boys have garnished. I may get back to you on that one.

CORE = Conservation Outdoor Recreation Education

You have to take the course to get a hunter number to apply for a hunting licence.

What kind of rifle is your 8mm Mauser? If it has a .323 bore then that would be by far the best choice for big game.

Mauser 98k with original iron sights. I've never shot it past 300m but at that range its dead accurate against a Figure 11 or a meter wide gong.
