First off the search engine sucks.
Second -
My wife is thinking about a stainless p89 in 9mm. She has won a contest and from a limited list of pistols she can pick one 9mm I haven't seen the list yet but know that a ruger p89 fits the requirements (available from store, less then $800, 9mm) She likes the stainless look hence the stainless.

We have both previously handled a very abused deactivated p89 when taking the RPAL testing. The biggest complaint was racking the slide was like running your hand over a cheese grater because the top was sharp and the slide took a lot of strength(and I'm not overly weak by any means) to move. I'm assuming one in good condition would work a lot better or do they all have a brutal spring like that?

When I have the list of whats available I'll probably post it up in a different thread but in the mean time I'm looking for feed back on what people think.

The end choice doesn't have to be award winning amazingly acurate. I'd say it needs to be reliable more then anything else. And of course looks will come into question.

get the list of pistol she can choose from, I'm sure there is better pistol for that money since a P89 is barely 550$ new.

Which store? We need more info :)

I would go for a CZ75, 1911, Glock, XD9 over a P89.

Ruger P series are good pistol, built like a tank, just less appealling, worth less.

They are aluminium framed, I don't know if that might change something (weight/durability) to you.

I had a P85 Ruger .
I wouldn't buy another .
Nothing really wrong with it , it went bang every time . It was just a bit clunky for me and the mag release and trigger left alot to be desired .
Personally I would go with other pistols .
In that price range I would go either Glock , CZ or XD . In that order .

So I was peeling potatoes while my wife talked with John at reliable guns where this will come from. I wondered what had gone wrong in the world and where I had left my skirt while she got the list of what meets the criteria.

Ruger p89
cz 75's
cz 650
sringfield XD
sig p220 used but reported in excellent shape
cz 75 sp-01 in black
cz 85 combat in satin nickle (more then $800 but I believe we could kick in the extra to make up the difference if thats what we choosed)
baby eagle

So what would you choose.

If it were me given that list I'd go for the CZ75 SP01, the nickel CZ85 or the P220. I'm guessing that you can't shoot any before you buy? That would be best since the gun that feels best doesn't always shoot the best. But, if not, the the one that feels best is what I'd pick. I'd also think about the XD although I've never fired one I've heard they're pretty good.

One of the best deals in the gun world right now is the CZ 75 SP-01. Night sights, full dust cover with rail, light recoil and super duper cool looks. $787 taxes and shipping in from Guns & Things.

Oh, and it shoots good too! :D

By the by, the Ruger P89 was my first handgun. I really liked it and would get one again. I'd get a stainless decocker model if I had to do it again. But I'd still get the CZ over the ruger, hands down.

Out of all you listed I would choose any of the CZ's or the XD for your wife. Take her to the store and see which one she likes and fits her best.

I have a p89, had it for about 13 years, this gun is a workhorse, never jammed on me, always reliable, always worked properly and very accurate. I shoots every type of bullet without any problem. My honest opinion though when it comes to handguns your wife must see what feels best in her hand from that list. Nobody can decide for her, they can only advise her if her selection is a good firearm or not.

Agreed. Nothing wrong with a P89, if it fits her hands. a very reliable gun IMO.

I have a P85 and love it. Never complains, I can drop it in the mud and snow and it works without question. It has also eaten any kind of 9MM I have thrown at it (about 5000 rounds so far and counting).

I can shoot rapid fire groups with it (10 rounds at 20 feet) and keep them within 8 inch groups.

All you Ruger H8TRS CAN BITE ME :D

Of course thats a P85 and not a P89. ;)

From that list, I would go with the XD. Fired a couple in 9MM and 40 and like the feel (for a plastic gun).

I bought RUPZUK's P-85. I am kinda partial to the ugly gun as I owned one back when I lived in the US, took it to Kuwait with me and home as well. Sold it before moving back here. I have never had an issue with it, shoots relatively accurate. You want a accurate tack-driver, buy a better gun. You want a reliable work horse, buy a ruger. The only issue is it may be a bit large for wifey's hands!
