Hello all...

I have been doing some long range plinking over the past few years and am looking to upgrade my scope

I currently have a Zeiss HD 5-25x50 plex reticle with the target turrets. The scope is fantastic out to 900yds, but just looking at a gong today at 1200yds, It seems i may need a bit more magnification.

I am interested in peoples opinions on the Sightron 10-50's and the 8-32's. Which would be the better to recommend? (There is a 20 moa of adjustment difference between the two) Also for reticles, is anyone using the MOA2 reticle that far out or going with the fine target dot crosshair or just the dot? I really like the LRTD 8-32 with the 1/8 moa adjustments.

The gun I'm shooting is a 6.5x55 shooting a 142gr sierra match king. I am using the burris zee rings with the inserts in them to give some extra elevation. Right now i using 22.5 moa to get out to 900yds.

Also, whats everyone using for a gong size out there. I am currently using a 17x17" hanging plate.

Thanks in advance for your comments

I do have SIII 10-50x60. Very good scope and I love the high magnification however if it is sunny day, you barely see the target staying still. It is the mirage issue. I even zoomed 40-50x at 100 yards to ensure it doesn't finch or shoot the same hole you shot previous...
I use a 20 MOA base.

Maybe the question is more about the size of your reticle and how much of the target it obscures????

Sightrons LRMOA have very small subtensions. The central dot is typically around 1/4 MOA so you would have no problem aiming on your gong at 1200yds. My personal fave is the SIII6-24X50 which I have used beyond 1mile on MOA'ish sized targets.

Glass is fantastic so seeing and aiming is not an issue.

Both the 8-32 and 10-50 will offer more mag for sure. I compete with the 10-50 (most at 32X) out to 1000yds and have no problem making very small adjustment on target... but mirage will have an effect. I like to see the mirage as it tells me what is going on with the air but some don't like the target wobbling... dialing back to 24X usually solves that. Why I use 24X for my rocks and gong scope.... wider field of view is really helpful to pick up misses.

With good glass and properly scaled reticle, you really don't need super high mag to aim precisely. I can put the central dot of my STAC3-16X42 on an exterior door knob at just over 1000yds.. that is a whole lot smaller then your gong.

But any of these will work very well for LR shooting.... just pick the features you prefer and enjoy.

PM or email if interested in a scope.

Thanks

Jerry
