Hi there,

I read a bit about firearm competitions:

IPSC: seems like a fast action game, where you have to move from points to points and hit some target using rapid fire. You get points according to your total time and targetting score. There are different gun classes, open (for race guns: what's a race gun anyway? a gun which has been modded to the bone just like a race car?), standard, production etc..

PPC: seems like just rapid fire, in different positions.

IDPA: I really have no clue about this one, I went on their official site, and no info there. But it seems to be the competition of choice for non-race gunners from a few forums thread i read...

Thanks for the infos :)

IDPA is defensive pistol craft. Similar to IPSC but the intent is to simulate real life ( or fantasy) occasions in which a pistol might be used to defend ones person.

As such the stages tend to be somewhat smaller in scale to IPSC matches.

The rules take into account actions that would be required to survive in a real life senario.

Such as retaining cover.

Tactical reloads etc.

Not really.
There are catagories for everything except Open Guns.

1911s etc are just fine.

It is more of a mindset issue. If you play IPSC with an IDPA frame of mind you will lose as you will be slow.

If you play IDPA with an IPSC mindset you will lose as you will be nuked by penalties.

Except that IPSC has production class too....Basically its the same sport with a slightly different set of rules

Check out the IDPA vids on youtube. I just saw a competition on the dish with David Sevigny and ...ummm...well some others guys, and it was a great match.

There's a big IPSC shoot in Montreal on the 18th , you should go and check it out.

Closest IDPA/CDP that I know of would be Cornwall if the do a match this year.

We ,SFFGC, just had an IDPA match 2 weekends ago but we are 2 1/2 hours away.

PPC: seems like just rapid fire, in different positions.

PPC is not rapid fire... The goal in that game is to use up every last second you're allowed. Sure, during stage 4 you can blast away and be done in a minute... Then you can stand there picking yer nose while the rest of the firing line takes their time and uses up their whole 2minutes 45 seconds. :D

I sometimes refere to PPC as "Bullseye" (shooting) from a holster...
