I haven't been shooting this, so I'm thinking I might sell or trade it off. Can anyone tell me what the fair market value would be? Manufactured bt Erfurt (dated 1915), 24" barrel, 8mm mauser, with a Lyman peep and front sight. Blueing is excellent, stock has a spacer, and the recoil pad is Pachmayr. Bore is nice and bright with excellent rifling. Here are some pics:

That looks like a small ring M98. I would like to know what the markings on the left receiver rail say. I doubt the stock or blueing are original and it is pobably a build up from an early military rifle. If it is marked 33/40 on the receiver side it has a decent value for a custom light weight Mauser sporter project. Barrel is either a new one or a recontoured barrel although the profile doesn't look quite right for that.

Post the pictures on Accurate Reloading as there are some Mauser buffs there that can tell you a lot about it.

The rifle is a sporterized WWI Gew 98 large ring mauser, The caliber is 8x57mmJS is the standard caliber of Germany in the War years.

The markings on the side would be Gew 98. The money is on to say this is a post WW II sporter. There were many companies after WWII that set up shop making hunting rifles.

Nice looking rifle, Seems to have a tapered after market barrel? Prices vary, the stock in in good shape along with a good bore, I think in the range of $350 to $550. There have been allot of Swedish rifles come up for sale from Tradex. Some are very similar looking to this one.

Hope this help

Regards

Peter

The Erfurt Mauser is a small ring 98(no step on the left where the receiver ring meets the side wall) that uses a large ring barrel. The thinner receiver wall may render them a bit questionable in the strength department. One of the odder Mauser variants.

That's what I originally thought, but if you look close, you can faintly see the the serial number on the barrel - the same as on the receiver. Somebody actually took the time to recontour the original barrel, and did an excellent job in reblueing.

The left of the receiver is marked Kar 98.

Be sure you don't post it for sale too cheap. The properly installed Lyman receiver sight and banded ramp front sight are easily worth more than a couple hundred bucks! :)

If you offer it for less than $350, it is a steal.

M98: Thanks for supplying that info. I've heard of them, never seen one. Sounds like a 257 Roberts basis rather than anything using a fatter case and nominally high pressures.

So it should be worth a Marlin 1894 of some sort (or something similar in value) in trade?
I'll probably list it in the EE this evening when I get home.
