Happened upon a 40X in .22-250. Stainless barrel at least 26", wood stock, single shot. Looks to be easily 90%+ cond..
Price seems great, just not in the loop on these rifles.
Thanks.

Not much to a precision shooter. They want repeaters...
A 40X is simply a 700 action that has not been milled out for a magazine. Used they are worth a bit more than a 700 to varmint and some target shooters.

Dennis?!?!

I consider myself a precision shooter and I use nothing but single shots!:D

An XR 100 in 22-250 will fetch a grand no problem, and it is a single shot.

The 40x

They came from remingtons custom shop.
I have one in 7.62 Nato, what's it worth, don't know but wouldn't sell it , it shoots 5 shot groups into one ragged hole. Makes life easy, I don't need another 308.

Can someone please throw a $ number out there? All this info is good, but a dollar ball park will help me decide if I scoop this or not. Even to flip or sit on or shoot.

What is it worth

Last new 40X I bought cost $2100 in 94. If you "need" this rifle and its in excellent condition $1200 - $1500 would not be too much. The only factory rifles that are as accurate as these were the PPC Sako factory customs. This would not make a good flip. It will be a fine shooter depending on round count.

Last one I saw was a 7.62 for $750.
The barrel on a used target type rifle is a pig in a poke. These things get shot, may well get shot a lot. May or may not be time for a new barrel. Unless you have an idea of how much the rifle has been used, it might be considered as a project - a candidate for a new barrel.
There are cartridges harder on barrels than the .22-.250, but a rifle in a varmint caliber may have been heavily used.
A thorough cleaning and careful inspection of the bore, particularly the throat, would be in order.

Wow. So it definitely might be worth taking a chance on....

One more ?, the wood stock seems very finished. I mean that the coating on the stock feels 'thick' for lack of a better term. Was this normal for 40X's?
The guy that has it said he sold it 4 years ago and the guy brought it back (trade in I'm assuming) with an unertl scope. Tried to sell it as a package and no takers. Sold the scope for a grand on-line and is looking to sell the rifle. Assuming he made most of his $ back already.

Ones I've seen had a very conventional finish. If it looks "thick" perhaps it has had a coat of varnish applied.
