Soo, started to clean off the bajinon layers of finnish on my enfied and Im unsure if this is a finnish or tarnished metal???.... Either way I called it a day and oiled and put my gun away till i figure out what to do with it ( when my full stock comes in )

Looks kinda neat.... Some sort of reaction maybe to the strippers?? Was using some gel stripper labeled for metal i had laying around.

If it's a milsurp, would it be parkerized instead of blued? Not sure myself, but smarter folk around here might know more than I.

If it's parkerized, then a different kind of stripper might be in order. Not sure, though.

The thing is this is what it looked like before striper. I had some left over gell in a jar i used to strip stocks with, their is a good chance I may have had oven cleaner in their too but forgot. I have several jars I test out when mixing BLO and finnishes, ect... So who knows what's in em anymore. I just know the striper because its a gell.

Maybe the hot water and lye from the stripper made a blueing?

So the metal got DARKER from the gel stripper?

If the stripper is intended for paint on metal then that's an odd reaction. If it's intended as a paint and varnish stripper for wood finishes then who knows what this reaction is?

Can said it was for metal, wood and plastic if i recall, Its been over a year since I bought it. That's what It looks like, Stuff doesn't wash off either. Its on their good. Hit it with break cleaner and nothing. The whole gun was bare metal now its.... Browned/grey.

I did strip it 3-4 times and let the stripper sit on there 10 min at a time. When I was done I was pretty confused honestly. Pretty sure now its a reaction with the lye after reading several threads elsewere.

Think im going to try to recreate this on scrap metal over night.

Looks like from the original pictures the gun was covered in some sort of Varnish. its possible a paint or varnish stripper had an odd effect on the metal after. id say you need to hit it with some sort of Rust remover. (CLR will remove bluing fairly well)

I was thinking varnish tho, strange because on top of that was the "original" ? black finnish.

Who know, guns almost a century old lol.
