I've honestly never really been drawn to any red rifles, so I'm just curious to hear from some Cz/Vz owners what the appeal is exactly? Is it because they're dirt cheap to own, even cheaper to operate (with corrosive/surplus ammo), easy to maintain, closest to an AK... all of the above?

Lets see... in no particular order...

  • They are not politically correct
  • They will freak most 'anti'
  • They will scare most 'Liberal'
  • They are fun to shoot
  • The are cheap to feed
  • They can be used for hunting
  • They're a reliable/proven design
  • There are many accessories available for them...
  • Accessories are reasonably priced
  • We buy them because we can :D
  • They are a better 'investment' than Facebook stocks :ar15:

What the appeal of the VZ58?

My VZ 58 7" in 7.62 is my favorite tactical rifle for a variety of reasons you hit on a few of those; cost, availability of ammo and maintenance.

The VZ are low cost, I don't consider them cheap as cheap implies lower quality (to me)... and the CZ are tanks with good craftsmanship.

I love the way they feel, I like the ergos, I like the trigger, I like the fireball that it barfs out, I like the power, the reliability and the smooth operation amongst other things.

The only thing I don't like is the stock Iron sights, aside from that, I love everything about my VZ. It is a fun, reliable and affordable platform. Not only that, it is a proven platform that has a lot to offer (hunting, sporting and non restricted status). A genuine well crafted machine at a reasonable price what more can you ask for?

^ That's non-restricted?

No, that one is a Restricted 7.5" version... when I wrote "It has a lot to offer" I didn't mean my VZ specifically, rather I meant the entire platform hence the (hunting, sporting and non-restricted) in brackets. They even a Canadian version if your feeling particularly patriotic. Best part is you can own a 7.5", 11" and a 19" with extra mags, optics and accessories for less than the cost of a Tavor, 2000, SIG, ACR or tier 1 AR :D

My point is that unlike the AR, you can carry a NR CZ/VZ wherever. Also you can use them for hunting Canada wide (In 7.62X39 chambering) unlike the Tavor, SIG, FS2000 and etc which would be be caliber restricted (no .223) in several provinces.

Ah. Well, if we're talking range-only toys - I'd probably be inclined to stick with my PWD AR (as "scary looking" as the CZ may be, my AR is more so... ;) ) It sounds like there might be more appeal for the NR version for the aforementioned reasons.

Umm... The appeal is 'It is a gun!!!'...:ar15:

Yeah, I wish that still did it for me...

Isn't that sacrilege though? ;)

In my mind yes it is. You want something like an AR, get an AR variant then. CZ's are iconic (not as much as an AK is) but they have been battle tested since the late 50's. Everything u have mentioned is a very good reason to own one. I am not a black rifle guy by any means but keeping wood on a rifle like this is what it is meant to be like for what i want anyway

I have to say the use of surplus 7.62x39 is a huge part of the appeal to me. If I could get a 100% reliable AR using 10 round XCR pistol mags in 7.62x39 I would go that way in a heartbeat. I have heard so many horror stories about AR's in 7.62x39 that I am very reluctant to even try to make one work for the $$$ involved.

That said, there is an appeal to something that is built eastern bloc rugged and folds to a super tiny package and makes big fireballs when you shoot it.:D

Cheap ammo, looks like an AK, lots of funny little aftermarket parts to make it think it's badass.

I'd never trust my life to one (ever seen the third bullet try to jump out of the mag?) but its fun and cheap and there's lots of them around.

I saw that you've gone over to the Dark Side...
Better not be thinking about parting with the Tavor... ;)

For me, the appeal was as follows:
-Non restricted (18.5 barrel version) so I can shoot it at my own target range, or anywhere else for that matter. Never limited to shooting only at a real range.
-Looks super cool... IMO as cool and "intimidating" as any black rifle
-TONS of upgrades to make it suite any style or purpose
-Reliable, almost to a fault.
-Finally, and maybe most importantly, I can buy 1300 rounds for $230 (when you can find it) so I can shoot all summer long for less than $500. I NEVER have to give the excuse "cant shoot today, spent too much $$ the last time out". Hehe.
-Also, to a much lesser extent. If the sky ever does fall on us, I have a spare unopened crate of ammo in the basement. Im also pretty sure id be able to find some 7.62 pretty much anywhere I go. Makes me feel more prepared.

You sure about that? ;)

I would echo the sentiments already stated. I love the ergonomics of the rifle and it feels so well balanced, then again so does a nice AR :)...but cost of operation and reliability are big factors for me. I went through TWO 1440 round crates of 40-year old military surplus this summer with out so much as a single hiccup. I only clean the bore after shooting and have field stripped it maybe twice. Also if you are into customizing...
