So im heading off to Newfoundland in a few days for a moose hunt, cant wait . Going home with two good buddies, we have 2 either ### tags for area 2, probally one of the best WMZ going.Anyways i was out at the range today doing some shooting and trying some new rounds, picked up a box of Rem Core Lokt, they didnt feed well at all and fired mostly single shots the whole time i was there, other than shooting Winchesters,no prob. This brings me to the question......??? What are some good 303 rounds, i want to explore more types of ammo, and where i am is faily limited.I have fired real good hand loads, but my buddy has since moved and im not big into relaoding myself. Any help would be appreicated.

Thanks

303 moose bullets

I would shoot Federal or Winchester 180 grainers for big critters like moose and get within about 150 yards for maximum effect.:D 215 grain bullets work very well but nobody loads them anymore.:(PS, some rifles don't like the RN types of bullets.

180's are tough pills for moose to swallow.

zero for 200 yards (about 2.7 inches at 100) and you're good to about 250 yards max (about a 4.5 inch drop at that range). It's best to keep shots 200 or less to give yourself a little 'saftey margin'.

At 150 you're hitting with more than 1800 ftlbs of energy - more than enough to mash a moose.

I have a stash of 216 grain Norma match bullets for my 303's, I only shoot them at game because I only have about 100 left.

why would you use match bullets on game? ethics. its for hunters too you see....

303 bullets

Those Remington 180 grain round nose core lokt are e###elent up close in the bush, but at a couple hundred yards open marshy areas still great. I reload myself but have a couple buddies who don't and they swear by them. Dean.C:dancingbanana:

Mine has problems feeding the corelokt 180s too.

eta: I found that they feed fine if I'm carefull to put the rim of the brass in front of the rim of the previous cartridge when loading the magazine, but am unwilling to trust that in a hunting situation.

well thats they key with loading the mag, roundnose or pointed bullets. the feed problem i get with the corelokts is they get stuck on a feed ramp originally designed for fully jacketed spitzer bullets

i recently switched from winchester power point to federal powershok
i find the round to be much cleaner in shape*no burs dimples etc* and i am getting 1-1.5" at 100 with them opposed to 2.5"+ at 100 this with the 180 grainers. i havent hunted moose so my advice would be based on bear and deer

Thanks for all the replys guys, the home loads i usesed were 215 gr, great bullet, used that round to bag my trophy black bear, real good round. For now ill stick with the winchesters, tried and true. As for cleaning and chacking the weapon, i can assure you my rifle is as clean , if not cleaner than any going, lol.

I find the bullets don't always stay in that pattern within the mag if it gets bumped or whatever while bouncing around in the truck, sometimes rounds will shift so that rim is directly above the rim of the lower round. This has never caused feeding problems with other rounds.

The only time I've ever had feeding troubles is with the corelokts which "get stuck on a feed ramp originally designed for fully jacketed spitzer bullets". I find it happens less if the bullets are loaded carefully and haven't been allowed to shift within the mag as I described.
