I've noticed that they generally run between $200 - $400, but I'd rather invest less in a plinker and more into something higher end (my deer/moose gun). it'll be my first gun purchase too (taking my PAL next week). thanks for the recommendations :)

I'd suggest a 10-22. SIR has them for $239. Bone stock they are good, with the option of anything you could possibly think of if you were so inclined.

Here is the most recent incarnation of my 1996 made 10-22.

Cheap, accurate, no mods needed....

hands down... Marlin 795.

Here's mine. It has an aftermarket stock (which is of course, not needed... I just like the look of it :) ) so it won't look quite like this when you see it at the store.

This is what it looks like from the factory:

Happy shooting!

Why buy new? There are lots and lots of good used .22 semi autos around. It would be amazing if you could not get a decent used .22 for no more than $125.

get the 597!

I have a 2.5-10x42 scope on mine and 30round mag for it. I bought it because it I liked the look of it a LOT more than the 10/22 or other .22's... 597 looks more like a centerfire to me :)

Eagle international and now Remington make 30round mags for the 597, just google it! or do a search here...I heard SIR mailorder had some...

Their are alot of cheap semi rimfires. Another one is the Savage 64. I've seen a few for about $200. Not sure if their are 30 round mags for it, though.

Another vote for Marlin. I have the 7000 (now discontinued, but shows up in the EE on occasion) it's a 795 with a heavy barrel. Love it! Heard good things about the model 60 too, if you don't mind a tubular magazine.

the rem 597 gets a lot of good reviews too, no personal experience, but I was set to buy one before I got into a new project

thanks for the suggestions! I have read more threads on the Ruger 10/22 being the better with the Remington 597 following (I also like the Ruger 10/22 cause it looks like a miniature Mini-14) behind it. at our Wholesale Sports, a couple of the guys supported the Ruger and then down at the Powder Keg, the rep swung for the Remington.

if there is that much of a variation in quality concerning either model tho, are they really that good a choice? anywhere that has a comparative review or something that lists the common pro's/con's of either model?

edit - what about the Winchester .22LR Wildfire?

I have the Savage 64F, very accurate and a great price, Le Baron has them for I believe $134.94...and they deliver.....I use it for plinking and on small game, excellent for 30yds or less (quarter size groups) and about loonie size groups @ 50yds.... Really good gun for the price...... ....
