i need a new scops. i want low power. 1-5? x20 or 24 what would you say would be the best scope.

this scope will be used on my 500 s&w 15" or 45-70 15" barrel for my encore rifle

i am looking at the nikon monarch african right now and they look real nice.

A friend of mine got a nice right-eye-shiner from a mal-adjusted Swift 4-12x40 - If you ask him, he'll tell you that's the most dangerous scope he's ever used lol.

Best is a tough call, but you could do worse than a VX3 1.75-6 with heavy duplex. Since it will run in low rings, I see little sense in useing the straight tube wonders.
The idea of a single shot DGR kinda makes the wheels wanna fall off my logic wagon.

NF 1-4x24 is my favorite (haven't tried a Short Dot yet, but that will be way over your budget). I also have a Leupold VXIII 1.5-5 and really like it. The NF (and some others, including some of the Leupolds) have the additional benefit of an illuminated reticle. Yes, I know, in a sudden charge, you might not have time to turn it on. However, given certain situations (such as tracking a wounded animal in thick cover or near dusk/dawn or what have you), it is a very useful option to have on a scope.

Well, you've certainly got all the scope rings you'll need for the next two barrel sets.

I'm a fan of the Leupold 1.5-5x scope for most hunting applications. I've not used their lighted reticle and suspect that it's just another thing to break or run out of batteries at the worst possible moment, but some guys swear by them. I have a 1.5-5x Vari-X III on my 416 Rigby and an considering buying another one for a spare for my trip to Africa. Mine has the heavy duplex reticle and is not lighted.

I have to concur with Dogleg - single shots and dangerous game don't really go together, but from the sound of what you're scoping, you're not really after what guys like Dogleg and I consider "Dangerous Game". Perhaps we should coin a new term "Menacing Game" for bears, wolves and cougars - critters that eat hikers.

as of right now the scope will be used on deer. but when i make my trip to africa in the next 2-3 year. i want to have a good scope. that i can change over to a new gun. or ill buy 2 of them and keep one for a spare if i like it.
