What's the Best Method of Cleaning gunk out of the 10/22

cleaner

My 10/22 has a lot of gunk in the chamber area and is most likely mostly lead mixed with lube. I believe this may be why my extractor cannot extract dud rounds. Is there a solvent that can efficiently get rid of this pasty lead?

Take it all apart and blast it with brake shoe cleaner. I hang everything on rabbit wire.It will be cleaner then new.

Usually the crap that builds up in a 10/22 is a mixture of powder residue & carbon mixed with lube. Oil in this area compounds the problem.

Try using a "dry lube". Remington makes one & I have had very good success with a dry lube from Radiator Specialty called Gunk Liquid Wrench Dry Lube, part #L512C. You can get this at most auto parts jobbers or CTC & possibly WalMart. This stuff goes on wet & then dries to a thin dry film.

I was thinking that the deformed rim was preventing extraction. I have just finished spraying the area of the chamber as well as the bolt with break cleaner. All the grey paste just dissolved leaving everything clean. When the break cleaner evaporated I sprayed the area with graphite. Hopefully, this will make extraction a bit better. I'll try and take the rifle out on the morrow and see if this has helped.

I'll second the Remington Dri-Lube. I took my receiver and trigger apart and blasted the works. Now all it takes is minimal solvent on a patch and everything wipes away no problem. Only takes about 10 mins to clean up my rifle at a day at the range and 30 mins once every 4 or 5 outings for a good thorough cleaning.

The best way to clean it is to never let it build up in the first place. Most lubes will cook into a carbon/powder residue which is hard to remove. New synthetic lubes like BreakFree CLP will not cook away and remain 'wet'. You don't even have to start with a clean gun before using it - spray it in and shoot away. The heat and movement from shooting will help loosen the old crud. You'll be amazed at how easily it cleans up afterwards.
