What's the big deal?

I say, give me a break! Shooting the AR15 with .223 is like shooting my pellet gun. NO recoil! To make matters worse, you have to put up with that annoying spring twang!

So what's the big deal? Why do these guns have such a following? Why are there so many afficionados? Now, I just purchased a RRA LAR-15 M4 and took it to the range and put rounds down range, but the novelty wore off pretty quickly!

With all due respect, why do so many people enjoy this rifle? Yes, it looks cooler than my M14, it has a pistol grip, you can attach an infinite multitude of accesories etc. I'm not trying to bash this system, just wanting to know what people's reaction will be, tell me what type off shooting they do with it, what are the possitives, stimulate a discussion, critique, etc....

Thanks

I joined the army reserve at 16, was issued a C7, always wanted one.

For me its been a mix and good and bad experiances with the rifle, especially using the beat to death Canadian forces version, but to have my own top of the line, right from the factory in "2006", at home, new manufacture, like your RRA, is the best. Don't get rid of your RRA, enjoy it. Sure it may sit for a while... but hey... it's still yours, and if you clean it properly it will outlast almost anything...

Well.... maybe not a zombie attack...

No recoil is also fine with me.

A lack of recoil is kind of a selling point, isn't it? Not everybody's definition of fun is being kicked in the shoulder by a mule (least of all soldiers who actually use the things). That is kind of the reason they went away from battle rifles and adopted intermediate cartridges in the first place.

I admit this was done with automatic weapons in mind, but many sport shooters seem to enjoy intermediate cartridges as well.

With a quality heavy barrel and the right ammo, its one heck of a good and accurate semi auto. I could never get that kind of accuracy from my m14 at such an affordable price. So if speed of fire comes into play, and minute of angle accuracy is enough, an AR15 is one heck of a rifle.

I must agree, I find that it's more of a novelty/look cool factor more than anything. With that being said, I don't know why I keep buying another AR, shoot it and realize once again for the millionth time that it's just a novelty and not a keeper for me and then have to sell it.

When the C-7 came in (replacing my beloved FN) I cringed...and watched the number of guys qualifying rise dramatically.

All soldiers were more acurate with the C-7.

We carried twice as many rounds as before.

Tactics changed, as we could now use sustained fire to keep the enemies heads down as we attacked.

The weapon was reliable, accurate, and 5.56 hit hard enough.

As a civilian rifle- we bought ours because my wife simply would not shot anything other than .22 due to the recoil. Bought her an AR, and she plain loved shooting it. I got one too, so we could both shoot together cheaply.

As a range rifle, it;s light, cheap to shoot, accurate, and reliable.

As a hunting weapon- the heavier, purpose built projectiles take deer clean with an accurately placed shot.

So, guess my question is what's wrong with it?

Cheers

Shoot fast and move fast - if you enjoyment is derived from making noises and recoil, AR is not much to write home about. If you are into practical marksmanship, AR is the key.

" it looks cooler than my M14, it has a pistol grip, you can attach an infinite multitude of accesories etc.. no recoil... "

What's not to like? I am missing something...

M-14: 1 shot = 1 dollar.

AR/XCR/ACR/ETC... 2 shots = 1 dollar.

I love my M-14, but I barely shoot it because of the ammunition cost. I cannot send a loonie down range every time I pull the trigger. I can, however, shoot a couple of quarters.

Excellent stuff! I love it. Yes, all of these are reasons to keep my AR. And I will continue to appreciate all the Good things that you have brought to my attention. It will take some getting used to but I have been given inspiration now and that is why I originally posted the thread!

:ar15:

Though I dont have an AR I do have an XCR and love the fact I can hunt gophers, coyotes, deer, black bear with ( got the 556 and 7.62 bbl). Black rifles alllow you to personalize your gun with so many options. In the case of a SHTF...nothing like a compact semi- auto to protect you and the family.

Cheers!!

Make sure you read all the cautions in the manual too, if your new to the AR there's a few things in there that tell you how to prevent damaging your rifle accidentally.

What kind of gun oil you using ?
