Im wondering what is the big difference in amodern winchester action and a pre 64?? I always see guys getting more for a pre 64, why is this??
I was also wanting to the difference between a model 7 action and a 700??

Cheers!!

Pre-64 winchesters were generally built better - after '64, Winchester introduced some cost-cutting measures that (some say) reduced quality. One of the cost cutting measures was moving to a push-feed style from a mauser claw style 'controlled' feed extractor.

Controlled feed has questionable value to most shooters - unless you're hunting dangerous game, or targets who shoot back, there's minimal difference.

model 7 is a shortened 700

same mag box length, but shorter bolt body, and less shroud in the back

they wont fit in the same stocks :)

Accuracy-wise, post-64 M70's are fine. Like anything, accuracy is a product of tolerances, which are a product of the QC processes of the company producing them.

Winchester has hit-and-miss QC, so some are real shooters, some aren't. IMHO - they're about the same as Ruger M77's in that regard.

The pre-64's were Controlled ROund Feed and thePost 64's were Push Feed.

Winchester has for the last decade or so gne back to the CRF model in it's "Classic" line of Mdl 70's

The workmanship on the old Winchesters has been highly praised, and therefore highly prized by shooters.

If you want a CRF Winchester (Which many do- including me, as I far prefer the CRF action to a PF action for virtually all big game hunting applications) then jsut buy a Classic. :)

Accuracy is probably better wiht the Post 64's and Classics than the PRe-64's ever were, as well...

Not to hijack this thread, the Montana actions available look fairly interesting. Newer technology in a pre 64 M70 style action (CRF).
I might have to pick one these up and replace my post 64.
