What's the difference between 5.56, 6.8 and 7.62 mags?

This is a newb question, since I'm new to AR mags...

Ok, I just recently got an XCR in 7.62 that came with several different 6.8 and the stock 7.62 mags. For kicks, I tried a 5.56 LAR mag (bought it for a rifle I don't have yet) in the XCR and it fit perfectly. Looking down into both the 6.8 and 5.56 mags, they look pretty close to the same and the 7.62 is damn close. For more kicks, I loaded a few 7.62x39 rounds into my 5.56 mag and they fit (snugly).

So what's the difference between these 3 sizes of mags? I ask because I'm wondering if I can gut a 7.62 mag and stuff the internals inside a Pmag,. just for the ###y factor.

Thanks!

7.62 and 6.8 are pretty much the same... Actually damn near exactly the same!

.223 5/30 mag body's have less curve
Smaller bump on the follower
Different guides in the nose of the mag
Slightly different radius in the feed lips
They also probably say .223 on them somewhere

.223 won't stack properly in any of my 7.62 mags nor will 7.62 stack evenly in my .223 mags... It fits but more like pickup sticks then stacked lumber if you know what I mean...

.223 and 6.8 are the same mag other than the follower, not sure how the 7.62x39 compares.

Sorry that is incorrect:

6.8Spc. and 7.62x39 use the same magazine and follower.

The only thing missing the the 6.8 stamp on the side. I'm not sure if/when we are getting 6.8 puistol mags but in the mean time, the 7.62x39 mags would do the trick for you.

7.62x39 mags are curved due to their tapered casing, stack like a fan. Not sure if the 6.8 is a tapered casing but the 6.8 mags are identical to the 7.62x39 as per Wolverine Supplies.
