If you're looking at 308/7.62, the initial offering was the Modern Hunter from ATRS, but it was $3000-$5000. The Stag 10 ($2000-$2250) and BCL102 ($1600) came out at about the same time, and most people are saying the Stag 10 is worth the extra money.
If you're looking at 223/5.56, ATRS has also made a Modern Varmint, but again, it's $3000+. I do not recommenced the $2000 Benelli MR1, as I've owned one and the build quality is too low for what you pay (and it just looks wonky). You're likely tracking the Ruger Mini 14, situation no change with that one. That brings up the joint Wolvering + Kodiak WK180C, which was released last year in an effort to get a non-restricted black gun built in Canada at the $1000 price point. There was a huge waiting list, and now the new ones are asking $1100. ATRS is definitely a good option, but they're pricey. As mentioned above, the Modern Sporter gets you the bare bones to build your own rifle from.
Back to the main recommendations being the Stag 10 (specifically the 10S MLOK model) or the WK180C.
