what's the recoil for the .270 WSM like?

my goal isn't to take shots at an animal that's 500m from me. my goal is to have a nice, reasonably light (remember, within reason) rifle that is powerful enough to kill all the game I wish.

I found the .243 a joy to shoot compared to my brothers M88 in .308, which was harsher, like I said, then the converted Mauser in .308. I have a friend with a P17 in 30.06 that I'm going to get soon. add it to my experience to see what kinda recoil tolerances I have. :)

I shot a 338 Federal the other day. that thing kicked like a mule on steroids!

If that bothered you don't buy anything larger than a 7mm-08 in an 8 pound rifle.

screw that, buy a Tikka T3 338 Win Mag, top it with a Simmons 3-9x50 in Weaver mounts, and GIV'R!!!!

That is a great combo which should split the recoil evenly between the young guy's shoulder and eyebrow ..................... ;) LoL

faster isn't exactly important, but following Gatehouses' TSX and TTSX threads, a lighter but faster bullet is proving to be just as good as a slower but heavier bullet from a larger caliber.

No, I don't neccesarilly believe that. I'm not going to take a 130gr TTSX grizzly hunting for example, but I will take a 270gr TSX from a .375...

Yes but you have to remember that Clarke worships at the velocity altar built by Roy Weatherby ;) while I personally think that old Roy was a false prophet.

Not really true. I'm not much of a fan of Weatherby cartridges (with a few exceptions), and I've never really been about velocity..What I *am* a fan of is using technology to make my life easier/better. If I can use a lighter, premium bullet that shoots flatter but does the same job on an animal as a heavier one with a more pronounced trajectory, I see no reason to use the heavy bullet.

Roy advocated using oversize cases to fling conventional size bullets, where they woudl blow up and cause "hydrostatic shock"...I'm much more about using a conventional sized case to fling lighter, premium bullets...:D

If I was to gauge your recoil tolerance based on that, then it could safely be said that you are definetely very recoil sensitive, no trials required. Nothing to be ashamed of though, we're not all built the same. I'm of the belief that recoil tolerance is both a mental and physical approach. Having said that, the .270WSM may recoil more than you can handle. I would suggest something along the line of a 7mm-08. Mild recoil, and good all around round. With a synthetic stock, you can easily modify it to add weight in both the forestock and buttstock and also add a good Limbsaver pad. :)

That's 2 funny, but believe it or not, I actually saw a salesman try to sell a 60 some year old fellow that must have weighed no more that 120 lbs soaken wet that very same combo

I'm recoil sensitive currently...I've barely had opportunity to fire anything, so I'm not even broke in yet. the 338 kicked like a mule, but that didn't stop me from firing the rest of the magazine...after the first shot, I knew better what to expect.

I'm honestly looking for a rifle that will take game with a milder recoil so I can work into it. my shoulder isn't trained and I want to train it nicely. getting ordered and slapped around is more conducive to beating then training, LOL!

and Gatehouse, I didn't mean to imply that you would use a lighter bullet because it was as effective as a heavier in every situation. of course, I still need to learn...I'll just add that clarification to my databank! ;)

If you are looking for a bench shooter. Stay with your 243. If you are looking for a hunting rifle, 30-06 (including the 338 federal) and down you are not going to notice the recoil when you take one or two shots with big game in your sights, the last thing you will think of is the recoil. If you still think its going to bother you, stick to your 243.

Sounds like a .270 win is what you need. I think most people can shoot 150 gr. bullets at max velocities for extented periods off the bench with no issues.

I've been shooting the 270 WSM for 5 years now and I have no complaints about the recoil. Its very tolerable and fun to shoot. I'm very happy with its performance.
