Whats the skinny on "inexpensive" scopes?

I ended up picking up a matte Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 locally.

I was looking at some other "cheaper" scopes (a Tasco, Simmons and cheaper Bushnell), but the clarity and brightness of the optics was actually quite dramatic and it didn't cost much more.

Thanks for the input folks.

Im sorry M.hitzy but Im pretty sure that bushnell are made in china too!

Yes, some of them are, did you not read my list? Only the sportsman and .22 rimfire are made in china.

The Bushnell line goes like this (IIRC)
Sportsman and .22 rimfire scopes: China
Banner and Trophy: Korea
Legend: Phillipines
Elite 3200/4200: Japan.

The only one I haven't owned over the years is the Legend so I'm not 100% on where it's made. It says right on the scope where they were manufactured though.
Bernse, does your Trophy say made in Korea on it? I'm glad you were able to look through a few of them before making your purchase. I'll buy chinese guns, computers, clothes, food, etc....... but chinese optics are just poor quality.

These come with a built in mount don't they? Can they be used on a 22 grooved receiver, or how about a weaver rail?

According to their web site, yes.

The major difference in cheap vs expensive scopes is the quality of the mechanical components. The cheapies will generally not take rough handleing and are not repeatable when making windage and elevation changes. I have a 30mm leupold on my 308 and it returns precisely to where it was set when I make adjustments then return. My 2.5X10 tasco and 6X24 Marstar work well on a 17HMR and 223 12BVSS, tey are pretty good but I don't play with the windage and elevation once set, and I sure as hell am very careful about bumping them. Just my $.02
