I just picked up a Stainless Marlin guide gun in 45-70 and it has the ghost ring rear peep and the factory front ramp. What is the deal with these guys, it seems to pick up the target quite quickly but really no way to align the sights, do you just try and keep the post as close to the center of the ring? With the buckhron you can line up the horizontal and vertical if you see my point? Is there a trick to it or just something you have to get used to ?
thanks

What you need to do jdemora is ignore the ghost ring and consentrate on the bead on the front sight (or top of post if there's no bead). The beauty of the things are that your eye will automatically centre the bead in the ghost ring without you thinking about it. Put the bead on the target and Bob's your uncle

I actually thought that was happening but was not sure, it appears tht the ring goes out of focus automaticaly adn I guess that is why they call it the ghost eh................ funny it just might work.........these guns are fun and sweet to shoot, mine has a pachmer decelerator also and the ported bbl she is good fun indeed.............thanks

"ghost ring " is one of those new terms that was coined in the last few years to describe a rear receiver or tang peep sight that has a large aperature.
Don't know where it came from, but it wasn't used when I was taught to use peep sights.
Anyway, yup, just ignore it and it will go away! ( the sight, that is!):)

I know you do a pile of peep sight shooting and competitively. I'm just curious for your sighting picture do you 'cover' the target with the bead so that POI is the middle of the bead?

The reason I ask is when I have tryed other guys rifles with peeps i would always seem to hit low. I finally figured its because I like the POI to be right on top of the bead, where most guys are set up as above. Am I the real oddball here and or do you think it really matters?..

jdemora, you will notice that your eye will play an interesting trick on you. The open space on the ghost ring will blurr except for the spot close to the exact centre. This area will be crystal clear and this is where you can place the top of your front sight. You will be able to judge easily where the centre is and place your front sight accordingly.
the military uses these sights as they are so effective. You will understand after you look for this clear spot.
