I may be showing my ignorance here but you always hear about 1911's and 1911 clones. Many semi autos look alike, but what does it have to be or have to constitute a 1911 style? What is the original 1911 and what does it stand for? Thanks

Well, to answer that question I would say to go waaaayyy back to the turn of the century and see what Mr. Browning was up to at that time. He made some revolutionary designs that were incorporated into the M1911.
Check out: http://www.m1911.org You can learn all about them there. Its a great site and an informative forum also.
