does anyone know what this is? bought it years ago in a bag of projectiles found from the battle of Shiloh, all the rest are lead balls and bullets, this one is obviously a different metal, such as tin. It has a ring all around the ball. Maybe it doesn't belong?

All sorts of "experimental" projectiles used in the civil war in both small arms and artillery. You could run into any type or composition in those 5 yrs....every armory & foundry (on both sides) in use tried to come up with a "perfect" killing machine that was cheap to make

I just looked at picts of 69cal belted ball for Brunswick rifle and it does seem to match a few picts on Google. Measure the diameter and I think you found your match. Very cool

I believe there were some "commercial" versions of the Brunswick belted ball system as well, but in your case, likely they will be for the Brunswick rifles.

The Confederacy used Brunswick rifles, made for such bullets.

Do an online search. Lots of information

I thought the early designs of the Brunswick belted balls were designed so the ring fit into two rifling grooves. The one in his pic looks like the bore riding section does just that, and relies on upsettage to engage the rifling. I am thinking the belt is far too wide to engage the rifling like a bullet of a Cape rifle. Is this correct? That era surely was one of rapid advances in ballistics. Very interesting for certain.
