It would have been easier to identify if the cork had been there.
Its a plug for the water jacket of a Vickers MMg when the steam condensing hose is not fitted.

Can't get nuthin' over on us Gunnnutz, eh??!!
This thinb sat in a parts bin of my dad's through 7 house moves and over 50 years!!
I was cleaning the bin out in 1999 and said "If you don;'t need this, I'm tossin' it"
"That's where it went!!" was the answer.
15 minutes later I had the story, confirmed that dad was a complete and urtter pack rat, and put the plug on my key chain!

Well I cheated a bit since I do have the rest of the gun!
Figure I'll take it out in a copuple of weeks and warm it up.
