What's up with the tin foil bottom metal on Savage MKII rimfires? !

I had to get new bottom metal as I was putting my MkII action in a Boyd's "Tacticool" stock. I just made my own (trigger guard, too) out of 1/8" cold-rolled steel plate. Didn't take long, and it's very, very strong.

You just bent it to shape? I've been thinking about cutting out a trigger guard from aluminum to replace the one on my lakefield mk II, I put it in a boyds SS evolution and cracked the thin plastic trigger guard bse tightening the front screw. If someone sells one for the savage as per r204 I'd be interested to hear about it.

looks good .did you ever make any in black ,that shiny one would look funny on my blued rifle ,,Dutch

It's cheaper and easier to just get stuff cut out of stainless these days, for the couple bucks extra and not having to deal with chemicals and blemishes and stuff, I would just spray some black krylon on it and be happy, plus even if you scratch it wear off the paint or get it wet, it'll never rust, unlike the rest of the rifle.

I did paint one with semi gloss balck paint it turned out ok. all I did was scuff it up with scotch brite pad and degreased it then put a couple of coats of paint on it. I only make them out of stainless because it is way stiffer material than mild steel. If you want one in black the cost would have to go up because of the extra time and materials it takes to paint them so you are better off just to paint it yourself.

the fit and finish turned me off, and I just can't get into the Tupperware stock that savage went to on the rimfires, they could otherwise own the market but still chose not to

My sentiment exactly. The day Savage decides to dip into their huge profits and redesign the Mark II stocks to something that does not suck royally...I'll consider getting one again. On the off chance Savage brass is reading this post :) ...please tell your designers to forget they ever saw a Ruger American and make sure the new Mark II stock takes no cues from the A17. Ugly/plain is OK if you must...just make sure the geometry is right, it keeps it's metal sling swivel studs and is a little more rigid.

Alligator print not req. :)

Metal trigger guard and proper bottom metal/mag plate welcome.

I've just decided not to deal with it and pillar bedded. My personal feeling on it is if you have to tweak torque to get the best performance you'll only benefit more from proper pillar and action bedding.

No more distorting or dealing with the bottom metal.

Do they not sell them with basically a boyds laminate on some of the MK II rimfires? Doesn't that check the box on your wants list or do you just not like the ergonomics of them?

On some models, yes. But, I'd like to think that a synthetic stock need not be a throwaway item. A few tweaks and it would be perfectly serviceable, lighter, and less expensive than a Boyd's. Marlin seems to do a much better job, save for the plastic sling swivel things molded-in on the XTs. The 795s/60s are fine too. All could be more rigid, but Savage hasn't figured out that something can be cheap, AND pretty good. They keep cranking-out cheap, but bad synthetic stocks.

The Savage Markii BV is pretty affordable considering it comes with the Boyd OEM laminate stock.I paid $339 after the rebate.I agree their synthetic stock is cheap and flimsy. The thumbhole laminate stocks are also very nice, also Boyds.

OK. I'll agree their synthetics kinda suck, not the biggest fan of the stock that came on the B MAG or and my model 16 isn't as nice as the other mid end stuff out there, but it sounds like your upset about their entry level MK II not being as nice as the rest of their MK's... Sorry to hear your upset about that...

What makes you think I'm upset about anything? lol I like the plastic MKII stocks..heck..I have a little pile of them in the corner of my gun room. (true)

Got the stainless bottom metal from r204, and it's a huge improvement! A highly recommended CGN seller. It's really the only improvement needed for this rifle.
