Can anyone explain to me the deal with the Savage model numbers?

Are some better made than others? More desirable? I'm looking at a 111 FCXP but I'm not sure.

I can't keep them straight.

Like...
111 FCXP
16fcss
12 BVSS

Any help?

I also believe teh ones ending in "P" are package models with scopes included. Some also do nto have the Accutrigger which, generally, makes them less popular though they are all the same action. The numbers indicate the action length and material used and other fun things. 16/116 are stainless, 12 are predator models, 10/110 are the LE series... and on and on.

The action is the same with all variants except the diff between CM and SS. Then you have a choice of two different triggers, 2 barrels contours in varying lengths, 2 mag styles and a variety of stocks.

That's it.

When you get into the target actions, you will get a barrel with a larger barrel shank and different port orientations on the action which are very clear to understand.

Being modular, you can mix and match the features you want then choose the Factory rifle that will do the job. Adding aftermarket parts to finish the job if necessary.
