What's wrong about Browning A-Bolts ?

Nothing except they're more expensive. The Tika's are in the same price range, but the others are 2 to 500 bucks less expensive. According to S.I.R.'s web page. Having the name 'Browning' on a rifle isn't worth the extra money.

No complaints at all with mine. Recently at our clubs High Power Shoot I even had a very experianced and knowledgeable Vet comment on how much he liked them. He was impressed with how smooth the bolt action is and how quick it is (60 degree lift I believe). You can also spend a little more and get a BOSS version to really fine tune your shooting. A very good rifle, but as pointed out ... more $$

Nice guns, they usually shoot OK, but overpriced. You can usually get a more accurate gun for less. Same reason why you don;t often see Wby MK V's around - there's nothing WRONG with them per se, just too expensive

For the price of a Browning and the required machine work, your investment is the same as a full meal deal custom action. You still have to work on it as much as a Rem but you start off almost double in price.

They are very pretty rifles and I am sure would work very well. Because of low demand, the aftermarket has few toys to trick out these actions which limits their appeal.

Browning triggers are best horrible, and there is not much available aftermarket, like Jewell . Timney makes a not bad replacement for the Abolt but that is about all that I have seen. The magazine set up also leaves alot to be desired in my opinion.

KNOCKKNOCK said it ....... Triggers are a joke .... and even worse is the magazine setup , why have a clip that you have to attache to a hinged floorplate ?????? but for the Browning fans "whatever floats yer boat"

I put a RKS 22-250 gain twist barrel on a Browning A-bolt Medallion and then learned why few precision shooters modify these. For the A-bolt magazine to feed properly you need to make all your handloads to minimum cartridge length and then you cannot set your bullets off the lands to improve accuracy. Therefore I was forced to junp 200 thousands of freebore and could only get .345 inch five shot groups out of it at 100 yards.
Also forget trying t find replacement parts for Brownings if you are trying to rebuild with an old unserviceable action.

No police dept. or military forces had ever used the A-bolt action as the starting platform for a sniper rifle. I think it says it all. The is no after market goodies. According to a gunsmith i know (who studied 3 years in Belgium), Browning are accurate, but nothing more than a hunting rifle, that's it. Their action carries too much parts and too much aluminium (what he told me).

No aftermarket stuff (as has been said), but also, why pay over $1000 for a BASE hunting rifle? Pay the same amount for an already decent Savage or Remington that's guaranteed to shoot better than the Browning.

I almost never have heard of an Abolt with an aftermarket barrel put on

Might that be because they shoot plenty well enough out of the box?

I like how you say "almost". You must know someone with one of Ted's barrels on his A-Bolt:D

I did a build on a 30-06 A-bolt, the only reason was the client was a southpaw and wanted a custom left handed action. It was the first one he found. Threw a 26" 1 in 10" twist heavy barrel on it, add a new laminate stock and it will group 5 rounds under an inch or better all day.

Pain in the butt inletting for the trigger area, bedding and ensuring it feeds etc, the trigger guard, would definately think twice before rebuilding one of those again.

Your kind of thinking reminds me why people buy Chrysler and Chev entry-level cars and you are right. However, there is a little more than just getting from point A to B in driving or hunting for that matter.

When you reach the point you want better things in life and can afford to buy more then you will appreciate why folks spend the extra to buy Lexus and Infiniti. By the way, there are cars that are more expensive than Lexus. ;) ;) ;)

I personally dont see what is so fancy about an Abolt. The SS stalkers have plastic stocks, just like a $300 Stevens 200.

lets not even try to talk about how stupid the BOSS is!

I had a hunter 300 WSM, it was a nice rifle, accurate with good velocites. I could take or leave the clip system, I topfed mine anyway. Mine didn't have the BOSS and I wouldn't have it anyway. I worried(probably for no reason) that the bolt would bind if dusty.
Mine just didn't excite me, that being said everything I shot at with it last year died a quick and humane death. 5 of 6 deer were one shotter and the 6th wasn;t the rifles fault.

They are also made in japan. Melted down toyota's and honda cubs. Junk in my opinion.
