i kind of like the look of them and theres one for sale for 2800. expensive i know. im sure i'll hear "just buy a black special" and i should. but i just want to know why not a m96? i never hear about them. people that own them say there great and thats it, but people always say that about things they own.

You are buying a gun that the manufacturer is no longer willing to support with parts, etc.
They are a neat design, but some of the features....quick detach barrel for example...proved, shall we say, problematic.....
RobArms has moved on the XCR which is/has some 'teething' problems.
Please note that the XCR's on the EE aren't exactly being 'snapped up' at the quite reasonable asking prices....
Make your own conclusions.....
(Please note that I have owned both M96 and XCR, and currently neither of these units reside in my lockers).

RobArms is a small compamy with no government contracts, that alone puts a lot of people off. Everyone I've heard talk about the M96 says it's a very good rifle, extremely well made of top quality materials and capable of accuracy on a par with the AR. Robinson's service is reputed to be excellent, a former member of this board had the first M96 in the country and when it started having teething problems Alex Robinson called him to discuss the issues and his thoughts for fixing them. This will not happen with any of the big or even medium companies I'm aware of. Personally if I was to look at something from RobArms right now it would be the XCR, it is their platform for the future, I just wish we could get it with a short tube and folding stock.

I had a M96 and it had no issues. It is a nice retro rifle for a change.

THe first one was for Bartok...and I probably had the second one.

The last generation of the M96 works very well, there were a few upgrades from the first one and the quick release barrel problem was more of a user error not putting it on right.

I asked Robarms resently if they had parts and was told yes!

Like GT I too had one of the first M96 rifles. They are a neat, fun rifle. I hiked with mine quite a bit, rotted the recoil spring out and it kept on running. It was a reasonably accurate firearms but did not take well to optics due to the stock/bore line, it was also very front heavy. Applied correctly the QD barrel never had issues. It is however not a fully realized product, the pins were not adequately captured, some of the screws would back out ie the mag release. The many springs seemed like they were from a Bic pen rather than a mil grade firearm. The original guns had roll pins on the op rod which captured the charging handle...they bent and broke, Robarm replaced them a stainless op rod with a very ugly weld piece instead of the roll pins. Robarm was always very helpful and gracious, I suppose they had to be given I was doing the beta testing on a 2500 dollar gun. The M96 will not survive a 2 day rifle class, the triggers are not strong. If I had an endless wallet I would buy two for the armory...I do not so a 6921 it is...

Nice thing about the M96, they are stainless steel, so if that's a factor for you I think that RobArms are the only company that's ever made a stainless 'mil style' rifle

I wanted to embrace these rifles...neat design, stainless....all the usual detail stuff...BUT...despite a willingness on RobArms to provide good customer support they HAD to....these have been touted as AR 'replacements' by the makers...and they most certainly are not.
I'm not saying that the AR didn't have it's own teething problems on it's way to a mature, reliable weapons platform, but the M96, and the XCR are overpriced for what they are, plain and simple.
At a lower price point, no one would have the same issues....
I have an Armalite AR180-B, and at around $1200, I don't have any issues with it's limitations compared to an AR15, Swiss Arms unit, SL-8, etc.

I used to own a M96 and loved it. The problem was getting spare parts was a nightmare and took upwards of several months. My rifle spent more time at the gunsmith waiting for a new part than it did in my safe at home. I ended up selling it and buying an AR-15 with a Trijicon scope.

We don't carry a large inventory of spare parts, it's true - but I take care of every repair, upgrade, and damaged piece that needs fixing. I personally see to every rifle that comes in for one thing or another. And while I don't have enough to sell off a ton of spares, I still take care of our customers, whether they're VEPR, M96, or XCR owners.

That said, our company is growing slowly but steadily. We broke both sales and shipment records for the company this year. I hope to get to a point where I have plenty of extras of everything for the M96.

I *can* send replacement parts to Canada. If anything breaks, my email is a click away.

XCRmonger, what is the availability of an early style barrel?
Mine is in the mid 700 range for serial numbers.
The barrel works fine but after so many years of Beta C dumps it is getting a little eroded.
