i like to spend around 300 on a hunting scope and closer to 700 or 800 on a long range/competition scope!

I can't seem to find anything that I like even for my rimfire that is under $300, that is a target style of optic. Red dot or similar minimal magnification optics can be satisfactory under that price.
For myself "hunting" is mostly 150 yards and under so $300-500 gets me some decent optics in the 2-7x or 3-9x magnification range.
Long-range or competition I am not into yet but I do love to reach out a long way on ground squirrels and for that purpose I like to have as much magnification as I can afford. It seems that to get magnification in the 16-18x range a person needs to spend $600-800; for magnification of 20x and above I haven't seen anything for less than $1000 that stays sharp, bright and crisp when cranked up.
And that's just judging clarity, when a person needs a scope that handles magnum recoil, has repeatable tracking and lots of MOA adjustment for long range shooting the price just keeps climbing.
