This would be for an M4 style AR in 5.56, 16" 1:9 twist

what ammo do you find shoots best? And what ammo is cheapest but still shoots ok?

Ruag GP 90 shoots about the best out of mine (Colt 1:7 twists). Equal to or better than some 68 and 77 grain match ammo from Blackhills shooting at 400m & 500m.
For match quality ammunition, I handload (or at least try to:D ).

As others have stated, for general training & up to around 200m the Winchester whiteboxed 'USA' brand ammo works (most times) well. You will find on the occassion though, that groups will grow from a decent 1.5" - 2" at 100m to 5" - 6" for no apparent reason (not shooter error;) ), using the same lot and even ammo from the same box.
Aside from this minor issue, it is decent ammunition for the price.

A steady diet of 55gr Winchester or Federal will do just fine.

X2. I don't shoot precision matches so this stuff works just fine. I know my 20" HBar shoot ~1.5" at 105 yds with this cheap surplus ammo. I use anything on sale thru my AR's. All seems to work fine.

Actually, I stocked up on about 4500 rounds a few years back... worked out to about $200/1000.

Nope, not for sale!

Bought it at milarm in Edmonton... not sure if they still carry it!
