Cricket, what form(s) of trap are you going to shoot? If your primary concern is ATA singles trap or handicap, you can get a nice used Perazzi TM - 1, have lots of change to spare and never have to apologize for the gun no matter where you shoot.

If some form of doubles or 2 shot trap will enter the picture then an U/O is the gun of choice. A minty but used Beretta 682 Gold E X-Trap will use up all of your budget, a new 686 E Trap with adjustable comb will leave you with about a thousand to spare - my personal favourite in the trap gun for the buck department.

If you want something different look at TSE's Fabarm line (nice guns & lots of choices) which are also very good values. Check out the "for sale" postings at your local trap club(s) as well.

For $3,500 I would buy the 686 E Trap with adjustable comb ($2,500 + tax), 10 flats of quality shells (~$500+ tax), a Trius OneStep (a self operated trap flinger $140 + tax) and spend what's left on targets. A man can have a whole lot of fun with a setup like that, and if you lose in competition it won't be because of the gun, or the ability to practice.

If your looking for a new gun a Browning XT is a nice trap gun for the money. If your looking for something used a Perazzi or Beretta as mentioned are good choices. I shoot a Remington 3200 Special Trap. It's probably the nicest shooting gun I've owned and for $1500 it was worth it. I think the best advice on guns I can give you is to head out to the club and shoot as many different guns as you can. An adjustable is comb is deffiantly a good feature as long as you know when to stop adjusting it sp are an adjustable rib. If you can find a Browning BT-99 plus I'm sure you'll like. 34" single barrel, adjustable comb, adjustable rib and adjustable length of pull with a recoil dampener. they all came from the facotory like that. There's a Citori Plus O/U aswell with all the same features. A guy at our club recently sold a Plus combo (32" single 30" O/U) with case for $2000.

If you have that amount to spend on a new gun the Beretta 682 Gold E or the Browning 525 would be the ones to look at. Pick the one that fits you better and feels best in your hands.

If you intend to shoot ATA trap and nothing else then a trap configuration is better. However if you intend to try skeet or sporting clays get a sporting clays configuration and use it for all the games.

Good used guns usually abound at the clay ranges as target shooters can be quite fickle about their guns. Used guns are often a better bet because they can be shot for years and then resold without much loss when you decide to switch guns.
