So, there have been many cartridges/rifles that have been factory produced. Many of these have been necked down or up to make new cartridges/rifles.

The 30-06 has offspring and so does the .308 just to name a couple. What is your favourite cartridge family?

Someone recently told me, "It is hard to beat the family lineage of the .308" After some thinking it's difficult to argue with that;)

Really, there are only a half-dozen or so cartridge families.

The Mauser (7x57, 8x57 and derivatives including the '06 which is a stretched mauser, and the 308 which is a shortened mauser, including THEIR offspring)

Then there's the 375H&H family, which is essentially all standard Magnums,

Also the 222 family - 222, 222 Mag, 223, 204, and others

Lastly there's the 404 Jeffrey family - short mags, super short mags & RUMS.

You might also want to count the 416 Rigby, as a fair number of Wby cartridges are based on this, as is the 338 Lapua

Other than that, there are a few other original designes, but spawned relatively few offspring - the 7.62x39 & PPC family, the 284 (really this falls under the 'mauser' derivatives,) the various rimmed cartridges, etc.

the '06 and 308 "families" are both offshots of the original patrone 88 (aka 8x57), courteousy of a german army commission at the spandau arsenal.

my favourite is the x57mm group of cartridges.

I love short actions and am a big 308 fan. I don't like long actions so I vote '08
My youngest shoots a 308 BLR and I had a mod 70 308 for years.

But I am now using a 270 WSM for all my hunting and I also think that the WSM qualifies as a family.

I'll go with the .375 family. Until relatively recently the list of cartridges based on the H&H, full-length read as the biggest and baddest in each respective caliber. Consider the .375 H&H/ Weatherby, .300 Weatherby, 7mm STW. Then saw a bit off the case and look at most of the standard magnums. About the only complaints about any of them center on a shooters ability ( or lack there-of) to handle the extra buck and roar. That seems like a shooter problem, not a cartridge problem. Efficency is for mopeds.;)

The #x57 has seen alot. I have the 6mm(6x57), 7x57 and now a 9.3x57 is on it's way. From varmints to big bullwinkle it should all be covered.
One day an 8x57 may be added, if the right one presents itself.

Second place would be the 06 clan.

Third goes to the Holland and Holland belted case, 300 super and the 375.
