Whats your favourite cartridge family?

what about the 38-55 family?....30 WCF, 7-30 waters, 219 zipper, 25-35, etc.

sorry to quote myself,but...

since the 30 remington is basically the 30 WCF minus the rim, is this not the case?

38-55 --> 30 WCF --> 30 remington --> 6.8 SPC

so an old black powder lever gun round leads to the so called cutting edge in the AR15?

There sure are a lot of votes for the 308 and/or the 30-06. Strange since they're all the same family ;)

Exactly! The .308 is basically a shortened 30-06, so they are more alike than they are different.

I would propose the following:

[1] .30/06 - /308 family (.270, 280, .243, 6mm, etc.)
[2] Belted Magnum family (7mm Mag, .300 Win Mag, etc.)
[3] WSM Family (.270WSM, .300WSM, etc.)
[4] SFI (Short Fat Italian) Family (- ie: Momma, Poppa, Nonno, Nonna, etc.):D

No. 4 is my choice of favourite family!

How's that for confusing?

The Mauser (7x57, 8x57 and derivatives including the '06 which is a stretched mauser, and the 308 which is a shortened mauser, including THEIR offspring)

Yes these are great.

I also like the idea of the belted magnum family. 7mm mag, 8mm mag, 300 H&H mag are all really great but maybe stretching it a bit to call them a family.

The 7mm "family" is a great one. 7X57, 7-08, 7mm mag....etc

So, there have been many cartridges/rifles that have been factory produced. Many of these have been necked down or up to make new cartridges/rifles.

The 30-06 has offspring and so does the .308 just to name a couple. What is your favourite cartridge family?

Someone recently told me, "It is hard to beat the family lineage of the .308" After some thinking it's difficult to argue with that;)
Do you mean by case or by bore size??

It's not that much of a stretch, they can all be formed from their common 'parent' - the 375 H&H.
