Back, quite a f e w years ago when I first started loading for mine, I went with and still use IMR 3031 under the Hornady 265gr FP. Today, I'd go with IMR 4198. I think it's a much better choice.
Agree with the above. Been using and reloading for my 444S since 1978 or 1979, first with Lee whack-a-mole loader system, then with 3-die RCBS full length resize. Always used IMR4198 over 265 Hornady JFP. Finally settled on much less than max powder charge, using 42.9 Grains of IMR4198. Lighter loads worked well for me (less than MOA @ 100 yards), used less powder when it was scarce, and is 'way easier on the barrel.
