I don't know about the rest of you folks but I am finding my interest in the older and proven rifles to be growing. Maybe its just me but I am finding a lot of the new rifles are like a lot of other things these days being built with a lot less quality.(just my opinion) A lot of guys seem to have problems with these new rifles. Am I the only one that is seeing this? What are your opinions on this?

Old or new, depends on the quality of the rifle itself. You can find some of the best made rifles, ever, brand new right now. You can also find cheap junk. And the same goes for old rifles.

One thing is certain in modern times though-there is a staggeringly large selection of whatever you are looking for.

One thing about old, they don't make them any more.
So if you find what you like and the price isn't mind absorbing,
gitt'er while she's hot in yer mitts.

I think you are on the right track!!! I was fortunate and given a whack of older firearms by my Father-in-Law. Comparing my made in the 70s Remington 700 to a brand new "top of the line" current production isn't fair.... A little handling will quickly demonstrate that build quality has suffered over the decades. Ditto for the 60s and 70s production Colt and S&W handguns.

I favor both, however thinking about my inventory, they are mostly new. I find that today there is manufactured junk en masse. It appears that the major North American gun manufactures produce a utilitarian firearm or two; with the exception of Mossberg, Savage, NEF, H&R, et al, at which all are utilitarian. It's like the difference between Dodge Ram and Toyota Tundra.;) There are many older firearms that I were manufactured with fantastic quality and continue that tradition today, most I believe are made in Europe.

Like Gatehouse says, 'quality' has nothing to do with new or old. There were lots of junk firearms made. And just as many that have been called junk that are not. Arisakas come to mind. War time propaganda called 'em junk, but post-war tests proved 'em to be the strongest rifles made during the war.
Ditto for Howa hunting rifles. Couldn't possibly be as good as American made, until it came to light that they make Weatherby's.
One must remember that 1964 saw Winchester redesigning their stuff for less expensive production methods and that 50 years ago.

My preference is old lever guns, but like the others have said, you can still get modern quality. Be prepared to pay for it.

Agreed- if you get the chance, and comparison between a "JM" stamped Marlin 1894 and one produced after the Remington takeover is a real eye-opener.

:agree:

I agree with what you guys are saying. Everyone has a preference or opinion. Personally I find the old guns very innovative and quite awesome in design considering the technology of the time. This goes for many of the popular brands.
