Heading out to hunt camp for a week, what do you like to take in the way of food?

Do you take the minimalist approach, and use simple and quick foods, (hot dogs, freeze-dried food, not much cooking involved)...

or go with a little more style, and create gourmet meals? (full-out turkey dinner and trimmings, and the like)

or something in between?

What's on your food to buy list?

It depends..

Assuming you are going to be hunting in a vehicle access area, I like to take a few prepared meals, that just need re heating.

But more and more I am taking just mountain house meals for dinner. Quick and easy, no mess to clean up etc. My buddy likes to take the whole works, steaks, pork chops, lasagnes, whatever...I figure I can eat liek a king any day, but when out hunting, I want to hunt, not spend time cooking and cleaning up.

ok, I should have said, deep in the bush, no driving to the golden arches.

You can only eat what you brung.

I was wondering about a week exclusively on M H meals... going to take a bunch to test out when I go....

depends if i am going by myself for one or two nights, i'll stick to mountain house and mr noodles. if there's a few of use going for a few days, we go for regular meals such as bacon eggs, instant pancakes, steaks that sort of thing. ask "nine" about his "touk" it's dee-lish.

If you have no cooler or fridge, I say go for the canned goods and m,r,e' s
Try to set up camp near a stream or lake and bring your fishing pole.

Thats how I do it, theres few things worse then bringing a pile of perishables just to have it all go to waste.

2 cans a day one in the morning and one at night 14 cans for 1 week basic eating, coffee and teabags for beverages, and toss 1 or 2 lemons in your bag there tough , dont rot quickly and add nice flavor and vitimin c to your water and tea.

My 2 cents

Last time I went for moose, I canned a bunch of venison ahead of time. Mix with canned potaotes and mixed veggies for a nice stir-fry. No worries about spoilage.

We have 6 guys going up with our party. Each person makes a dinner meal for the whole camp, generally a lasagna sized dish. With that, we generally pickup enough loafs of bread and cold cuts for everybody's lunches for the week as well as breakfast stuff and all split on the costs. Other than that we take up some snacks for ourselves. I'll be taking pepperettes, jerky and some chocolate bars with me.

The snacks I am taking are more for a survival type situation where I may need the extra sugar/energy. But as usual I know I will enjoy them through the days.

cd.

Last Chef I hunted with, showed up with a bottle of Scotch and a bag of rice.

I have been thinking of bringen a small slow cooker along on my next hunt, since I usually rent a cabin or motel room with a kithcenette for my "hunting camp", that way I just have to pluck the slow cooker in, and when I come back in the evening, the supper is ready :)

Often, I also buy several ready made sandwitches at the local grocery store, which will stay fresh for days in the cellophan wraps, and that way get a nice lunch while hunting.

Also, after the hunt, I enjoy going and eating at local restaurants :)

Elk and moose T-bones and/or tenderloins, elk/moose jalopeno/cheese smokies, elk/moose kubasa, cheese, crackers, potatoes, onions, garlic, bacon/eggs, instant hot water porrage for the fast morning (OH MY Good -we slept in breakfast), moose/elk meat stew, moose/elk hamburger soup, homemade cookies, ingredients to make our Kudaka dish (ruff grouse breast meat in a cream/dill sauce with garlic sauteed canned potoates and green onions). Pan fry up some perogies.....WE EAT LIKE KINGS.

Maybe a few Canadians and clam when we get back to camp prepping supper, plus the "Nectar of the Gods" Lamb's Palm Breeze amber rum to wash everything down before/during and after supper.

We are thinking of buying a turkey deepfrier to try-maybe next year.

Cant wait......leaving in 14 days.

My list is pretty easy. Chunky clam chower soup, hot dogs and granola bars.
By the time I get back to camp at the end of the day, its dark outside and I just want something quick.

Eight to nine guys in our moose group.
Everyone contributes one frozen main course for suppers. Placed in large Becel containers (throw away and yes, we take everyting out with us) then wrapped with newspaper, labeled, then stored in coolers until needed.
Roast beef, sliced with gravy; Turkey, sliced with gravy, spaghetti; roast pork, sliced with gravy; even BBQ'd steaks etc. Just take from cooler in the morning to defrost and heat in a pot in the evening.
Canned 'taters and veggies
We drive from Ottawa to an area past Elk Lake, then a hour and a half boat ride in with our gear, set up tents etc.
Stuff stays good for the week + we are in camp.

I have access to dry ice now (free!!) so packing something that will spoil is not a worry anymore!
Word to the wise though- many hunters have returned to civilization famished after they went under the assumption that they could supplement their meals with what they caught or shot!

Food is minimal for me, it will be mostly oatmeal bars, beef jerky and a couple of sandwiches. Something that won't stink or make noise. I'm just bringing one water bottle and a filter.

I'm driving to a lake in the afternoon, towing a canoe out to the backwater, and paddling until I find a spot I like with some sign. Then I'll set up some scent and call occasionally from the canoe where I'm tucked into my bivi bag. I hope to have one around by morning and I'll pack up by noon if I don't. Dropping one in the morning in a decent spot should give enough time to dress and quarter it, and at least haul it back to the boat by dark. I'll have to work the next day.

I don't mind a "Mexican Breakfast" in the bush - i.e. a shot of whiskey and a cigarette....

but come dinnertime, I like to eat decent meal. That can be a Mountain House stew, with added veggies etc, or grilled steaks and potatoes... even canned soup and baguette is fine... things like hotdogs I only have for lunch, if I even have lunch.

Bacon
Eggs
Sausages
Bread
potatoes
Kraft Dinner (one box max)
Wieners and buns
steak
onions
garlic
S&P
burgers (usually bear or something)
Beans with molasses

This is my standard list, I might also bring some duck or goose breasts, pasta, some veggies, cheese etc.

Feast or famine

Each to his own but we like being out and eating really well while we're there. We cook two meals a day and make 'em pretty substantial. All it takes is a run of cold weather or rain to make you hungry and a full-on huntcamp feed is the cure!
