http://Was at range on Wed with a young friend who I shoot with.
He had a brand new never fired, he bought it from a member here on site.
I looked at gun and it was a Tika Varminter base gun, he had put on his 8 to25 30 mm Leupold Varmit scope, it was in 65x55 cal, he has a old 65x55 that he shoots very well in Milsurp shoots he does good work on his reloading, does primer pockets inside and out neck sizes only, and his brass is always in fine shape. aqnd seted them just off rifling
I watched him shoot these targets through my spotting scope, I am not a Tika or Savage man but lately he has been doing very well with his Savage as well, in .223
He loaded some 142gr sierra MK over a light charge of 4064 powdery he tryed
he fired his first five shot group and we both where dazeled say the least.
his third group he put 3 bullets in one small hole .125.or less
Today he shot a very decent group at 300 yards considering it was quite windy and lots of gusts.
some fine shooting factory gun,http://http://
300 yards todayhttp://

I think that many manufacturer's firearms do very well out of the box it is only my opinion that many people believe that there factory guns are inadequate to deliver the accuracy they desire this has to do with skills more than anything else and the willingness to reload. I am a firm believer that majority of rifles can deliver accuracy that the owners are unable to deliver .Case in point my Brother has our dads Savage model 99E in 300 Savage I sight it in for him every year in August and at 100m it gets 5 shot groups under a 1/2 " not bad for a lever gun .I believe that if people spent more time shooting instead of buying the latest trigger or having the coolest looking rifle with all the bells and whistles they would become masters of there rifles instead of slaves to rifle

i think many 'out of the box' guns make fine shooters for the 'average user'.

If you feel you can shoot better than your gun, put the challange back into the sport and buy a tricked out custom rig that can shoot every shot into the same hole

I am impressed that manufacturers are still able to mass produce these firearms and obtain good accuracy even through all the cost cutting. Rifles like these enable shooters to learn the necessary skills to shoot well and accurately without breaking the bank. They aren't limited to factory spec either, these firearms are good enough to justify the purchase of better scopes, stocks, barrels and other components. I personally have chosen to upgrade my savage 12bvss in .223 with a robertson composite h&h stock.

I think some of the point of the original post is to point out that factory rifles *ok not all of them* can indeed shoot every shot into the same hole.

I smiled when I saw the results, not only because I love Tikkas and have always been VERY impressed by their our-of-box accuracy (in spite of plenty of vocal resentment of their cost, stocks and other issues), but because it was done with a 6.5X55... a cartridge designed over a century ago.

Nice shooting!!!

It is more difficult to become a better shooter when the gun is not capable of placing 5 shots basically in the same hole, because you never know when the mistakes are yours, or the limitations of the gun.

I'm sorry to say it appears you can't blame the gun!

Enjoy, or let me know when he wants to sell it!!!

I recently had the joy of having the "out of the box" experience with a Savage. Its a great way to introduce a new long range shooter to the sport. At least that's what happened in my case.

For under a $1000 I was into something new and had results that keep my coming back for more. There's nothing more frustrating than trying something new and having nothing but problems.

Once I get some more practice in I will be looking at a custum rig, or at least a second hand custom rig.

If you don't open the door how can you walk in? I think that's what "out of the box" performance does.

X2 It might be better if you typed in S***** rather than the Savage though, and a lever gun at that.:) You know back when I spent alot of time around a range that had quite a few people passing through it amazed me how often people didn't practice, didn't check their action screws, ring screws or scope mounts and didn't know how to sight their rifles in. I've wondered from time to time how much poor accuracy is due to such variables. One thing I always did with a rifle of my own that didn't shoot, was get a friend who I knew was a good shot to shoot it...sometimes with surprising results:redface: On the other hand, you have to admit that the above shooting sure is fine right out of the box.

I also love Tikkas and own 3 target (per say) varmint rifles from them.

I will get slandered for saying this but it is what I experienced..

I have a 222 rem Varm a 7mm mag Varm and a Tic Tack 308.

Load development was easy and they all shot excellent out of the box with only the trigger adjusted to teh lowest pull.

I have also a number of remingtons the R-5 Milspec 308 a 300 sendero, and a 243 sps varmint style , these remingtons shoot but it took more work, more load development and pissing around with the bedding and stocks x10 times the tweeking that the Tikkas took.

Are they as accurate, now almost. If i need to make the shot I would grab one of the tikkas, they are more predictable.

This is my oppinion only!
