Whelen vs rem

The 35 Remington in that rifle can be loaded with spire point bullets and they can be stepped up quite a bit over factory ballistics. I would use it as is.

I think we should remember we are playing in the great outdoors and mother nature can play nasty tricks upon us carbon units.

Myself I think of worst case scenario:
You dropped a nice moose and while packing it out in the wilds of McBride, you find yourself alone because your partner got his quad stuck in a muddy trail.
And the other guy is winching him out.

You are packing meat out totally alone now.
Do you want that 35 Remington as a trail companion or the 35 Whelen??

I archery hunt as well. No rifle present. However in ontario im not worried about bears and if i had to snuff one at close range im sure the 35 rem would do well

the 35 might haave a Rim but its still old school and fits my bill as a cool little single or brush gun.... but im a bit weird like that.

the Whelen can always be 'loaded' down a bit so its not an absolute thumper in a light platform.

after being in the 9.3 and 35 gang i have no rush to go back to the 9.3 cal unless its a x57 an a ruger 1.

Yeah fair call about the lever version of the 35 Rem..... that would be cool!

my lever platform is a 375 winnie , rimmed and the #1 is rimmed 303..............

The Game your hunting wont mind , wouldnt the 35 Rem be a tad bit lesser than the 358 winchester??

Yes the rem lacks behind the winchester. If i went with a lever gun it would be a 4570 or 41 mag or 25/35. I like oddball stuff to.
I just enjoy the slim flat sided single shot design. Easy slipping thru brush and carrying all day. A centerfire version to match my muzzleloader would be nice. I was hoping for flatter shooting than the 4570 hence the whelen but that lil 35 rem rifle was just a perfect handling lightweight rifle it made me think

Sounds like you should buy the 35 rem and if you want a bit more power while keeping an “oddball” chambering, ream it out to 356 Win.

That would require redoing the extractor. Im no gunsmith but i think that would lead to complications which would end up likely costing as much as the rifle itself. I maybe completely wrong though. Also 35 rem and 35 whelen brass is much easier to source.

At close range, the 35 Rem will work fine on your bears. It still has about the 1000 ft-lbs of energy at 100 yards. Like to have more than that for moose, but they are are relative wimps for their size and can be harvested with less powerful cartridges.
The 35 Whelen definitely has more and can do more. Saw a used Ruger No.1B rebarrelled to the Whelen in a store in Grande Prairie yesterday. They were asking $1200 IIRC.
Singleshot rifles are definitely lighter and shorter for stalking.
I do agree that for a nice stalking rifle, it is hard to beat the Winchester or Marlin lever action in 356 Win, and would be a great compromise and fit your needs quite nicely. Ammo can be harder to find, but is not impossible. But the Marlin in 35 Rem may be a better choice for your daughter.
The Browning BLR in 358 Win is also a great stalking rifle and has the added benefit of the detachable magazine and use of spitzer bullets. There are a couple of choices out there for ammo now too.
Have experience with rifles in all of the above cartridges. Have yet to harvest game with the 356 Win and 35 Rem though. The 35 cal is a fun one!

My "bad weather" rifle is a 7600 Remington in 35 Whelen. Blue & wood. After being out in everything with it over the last 35 years, there's been no problem.
Never a fail to feed or extract. Still in very good to excellent condition.

If I were to want a Ruger No. 1, it would be in 9.3 x 74 .... just because those big long "lady fingers' are cool.

For a lever, my preference would be a Model 71 Winchester in 348 or a Model '86 in 45-70 or 45-90 !
