If you change the barrel out on a center fire rifle what is the min lenght of barrel that can be used before there are any restrictions on it?

Does the barrel lenght matter or is it total lenght including stock?
:nest:

If it's a newly manufactured barrel, OAL of the firearm will be your only concern. But if you're cutting the existing barrel down, you'll need to keep 18.5 inches and longer for it to remain non-restricted.

"...so the over length must be 26"..." Yep. The whole rifle must be 26" or longer. The cartridge/calibre will determine the best length for the barrel. Short barrels on deer sized game rifles increase the muzzle blast and noise and have less velocity. A short barrel isn't always desirable.

26 inches overall length of firearm does not mean you can replace a barrel with just any length ... the barrel must be manufactured for that firearm at a specific length and the RCMP will have to have that in their data.

Buy a blank barrel at 28 inches and it can not be cut shorter than 18 inches for a bolt action.

That sort of flies in the face of the Dlask shorty shotguns. Now I wouldn't want super short barreled guns like that, but it is a question of legality rather than practicality. Not long ago I thought 18" and 26" was the golden rule, but when someone asks me now what the minimum legal length is I just shrug.

Dennis, if someone sends you a bolt gun with a 16" barrel and asks you to crown it, what are your legal obligations?

My comments had to do with cutting a barrel blank. Dlask is registered as a manufacturer of those short length barrels. He is not cutting a barrel blank, he is a registered manufacturer of the product.

A re-crown on a 16 inch barrel might technically be considered shortening it but I would imagine there would be tolerances so, a recrown which changed the length by .050 would be OK while reducing the length by 1/2' would not. Generally speaking, the short barrels are only legal if they are as they were produced by the manufacturer. I don't think one could even, legally, replace a ruined 16 inch factory barrel with a 17 inch barrel regardless of the original configuration of the rifle. The gunsmith could reline the original barrel but any replacement would have to meet the 18 inch minimum.
I do recall one case where a fellow came in with what was claimed to be an original Model 94 Trapper model with a twelve inch barrel. Now I could tell at a glance that it was not a factory produced rifle but had been cut down. The firearms officer was convinced, having been shown an old Winchester catalogue, that it was original and had given the owner paper to cover it.
Back to the recrown. Most people would be likely to observe the "don't ask, don't tell" rule but a cautious gunsmith might want to think it over and maybe even check with an RCMP officer who knows. Assuming he could find one. Regards, Bill.

Yeah Winchester made the trapper in a 16 inch barrel I have seen a number of guns that gunsmiths have shortened and claim to be factory. Trick has been done to death and it's not to hard to tell the fakes from the real trapper. Most trappers were stamped with the model on the barrel and the front site was often welded on. Pretty simple to spot the fakes Bill. Thing is most police and RCMP don't know much about guns so a lot of them slip through through the cracks and get registered as non restricted. But who cares! 18 inches 16 inches its all semantics and you still can't put it in your pocket.

For all interested - the Imperial measurement of 18 or 18.5 inches is an approximate ,the law states 457mm minimum length . This is in the CFSC manual for anyone that has reviewed it.

Good news Bill 457 MM is 17.99213 inches. You have .008 to make that crown. Or, we is gonna make a fortune shortening 18 inch barrels down to the minimum length of 17.99213 inchs he he he he he he. Lets see its from the high point on the crown to the bolt face. Anyone got an 18 inch depth micrometer for sale? Rod
