When does it stop?

I have a respectable collection of rifles and shotguns that I started to accumulate in the past 18 months. I can cover any kind of game I expect I'll ever wish to hunt. Problem is I don't have a .25, a .26, or a .30 calibre, and that just doesn't seem right. As well, I find myself wanting a 7x57, and I should get a true big bore. Oh and I need a 20 guage, and another 12 guage semi-auto, and ....

Honestly, my money is probably better spent on using the guns I already have, but what's a guy to do?

Like I've said for a long time, I don't want all the guns in the world, just one of everything. But then someone suggested to me that what would be wrong with having two of everything, and really I can't see the wrong in that. So I guess, I'm not the one to answer your question.:p :p ;) :D :D

I had quite a few of guns, then I slimmed them down, then I bought one, sold one, etc etc

It's a sickness I dotn want to cure :D

It's a sickness for which there is no cure. :p

You can stave off the symptoms by acquiring more, though. :D

And welcome to the club... ;)

You seem to be doing just fine NWT' but I'd forgo the new scatterguns and use the savings to get those rifle calibre holes filled :) Mind you you could chose between the 25 and 26, skip one and buy another shot gun with those proceeds I guess

Is it a bad thing if I start getting the shakes if I haven't bought, traded, or sold at least one gun in a month:confused:

No and it's even a good thing if you get the shakes when you're thinking about/anticipating your next 'deal'... ;) :D

Stop filling holes in your colection with jsut any old gun, and start buyign quality.

I know lots of guys that say, oh, I'd love a custom rifle, but I can't afford it...

But behind them they have dozens of factory rifles and shotguns that they hardly use.

Spend the $$ on a really nice gun, or on ammo and a hunitng trip!;)

yeah but new guns have no soul or character. even if i had a brand new high quailty rifle in my safe, i bet 9 times out of 10 i'd reach past it for the battered Krag or bubba'd SMLE.

I've sold just about all the rifles I had, and from now on I'm going the route Gatehouse suggests: Quality or I'll keep saving my $.

Don't underestimate the value of an inexpensive gun. If you are at the right place at the right time you can often get bargains on very good shooters. I think one gun in your safe for every birthday you have had is a good limit for yourself.

I've got a LONG way to go. :( :p
Seriously, if you actually use the firearms you have I can't see any harm in acquiring them, so long as it isn't at the expense of everything else i.e. mortgage, marriage, kids, other important responsibilities, etc..
But as I say, I can't see any harm in it.
In fact I only wish I could enter into it with more gusto.
My present acquisition is one every 9 months if you stretch stuff out.
The only thing I would say is to find trustworthy young shooters who need encouragement and teach them & allow them to use those firearms that you have had the priviledge to own so they can hone their own skills and decide which calibre is best for them.
I am fortunate enough to have had a number of well heeled and experienced shooters do the same for me.

I don't expect it to stop for many years (Gunut Fever). I've only been shooting for 3 years and I've spent every spare cent I make on firearms and their accessories. I'll be paying off 2 that I just bought in December for the next 4 months but I know my next purchase will come long before that time.

You will accumulate then you will thin the herd to a few reliables, then you will get back into buying back the ones you wish you hadn't sold .......it never ends.

But it sure beats wasting money on homely girls.......

Reasonable Limits??

This is a really good bunch to ask a question like that!!

Actually, this IS a good bunch to provide some insight and experience...

I never though much about Savage model 99 until my wife decided that's what she wanted (.308). I've grouped it a few times when sighting in a new scope or checking ammo differences and am impressed at how well the darn thing shoots.

If there's a model 99 in .243 I may be a taker, soon. The point is that there are any number of pleasant surprises to be had trying out other makes, actions and calibers and why not just have at it?

Have fun!

Face reality. It never ends. It starts out a hobby, one or two a year, then it morphs to a severe obsession. You start buying no-name food, going to several stores to save $10, then you start hitchiking to work, to save gas money, then you have a yard sale, every week. My doctor told me to stop buying guns, then I took him shooting, now he's on leave for a severe obsession ......;)

My "respectable collection" has followed Gatehouse's mantra from the start. Five Sako, one Beretta (shotgun), one CZ, a nice O/U 12 ga., and a nice 16 ga. SxS.

My wife kicked in a 10/22. and I bought my kids a Mossberg Bantam 500 (.410).

I'd like to part with a Winchester 1200 that I got in a trade for old ski-doo parts, an old, used, ugly H&R Toploader .410 that I've had for years, a Cooey Model 39 and Marlin Model 80DL that an oldtimer gave me last month.

This is not a large collection, but IMO its respectable. I don't expect to get much for those guns I want to sell, but the proceeds will go toward some reloading equipment or having some work done on one or two of the guns I'm keeping.

I'm now learning to pace myself, rather than chase every opportunity that piques my fancy. I'd like to add a nice 25-06 in the next few months have one of my Sako's rechambered in the next couple of years and add a custom 7x57 after that.
