When hares change colour?

Anyone know approximately when hares start to change colour in central and eastern Ontario?

Not sure about Ont but the only 2 I have shot here in BC were White (one was white with speckles of grey) but I have seen a brown and one that was grey (maybe in the midst of changing).

The weather is still very nice here in Ontario so I will try small game this weekend.

In NB & ON, I have noticed that they are white coming into December. I pray every year for a GREEN Christmas so I can hunt them when they are WHITE for a couple weeks!

It is pretty easy to tell when they are white as you will see them EVERYWHERE when the population is good! They sure are a bugger to see when they are brown, usually having to see movement to catch them off guard!

I saw one last week during the deer hunt Haliburton area. Only the feet and legs were white.

Hares + weasels change their coat color regulated by the shortening of daylight hours.It has nothing to do with temperature change.That's an old wives tale............the jacks in AB are white now.......Harold

I saw one two weeks ago that was about 70/30 brown/white in central ON. As mentioned above it was nothing to do with temperature and everything to do with light.

Just came back from Timmins where the hare have almost completely changed. Not sure about home though ( Barrie area)

Our group took four hare the last week of October, just north of Kirkland Lake. They had a similar colouration.
