When is the Elk rut in South Easter BC?

I would say your dates are right between the first and second rut. Calling may not be great but if the weather is cold and snotty those elk will be moving around a little lower elevation. That time of year we see them in the avalanche shoots as they are coming out of the higher ground.

Peak rut is around the September 20-24 in my experience with a smaller second rut around the 10th of October.

Oct 1st will be in the later part of the rut.

Anywhere between early/mid Sept to early/mid Oct, should be the rut.

Go mid-Sept.

I was only offered Oct 1st by this outfitter. I like him amd has a pretty good reputation. But another one 1/2hr away has most of Sept available. Hard decision to make, but beginning of Oct with a reputable outfitter might be a good place to spend my money.

I hunted elk on the eastern side of the Great Continental Divide, which is across from south-eastern B.C., East Kootenay. It all depends on the temperature in September, if cool and crispy, they will start the rut in the first week. Ruts have been delayed by warm temperatures, therefore ruts will continue into early October.

We usually start hearing them bugle some time in the first week of September but not very aggressively. By the 18th is full on. If you can book for the 15th to 22nd, you’ll have some fun.

October 1 would be Ok. The earliest that I have gotten a bull is September 13, it can be very hot early in the season. If I had my choice it would be around September 19th +/-.

Don't know about Elk but one time hunting Caribou in Nlfd (I had either ### tag), my guide said shoot a cow instead of a bull because the rut was on and the bulls meat would be browsy (wasn't that favourable). Having said that, I've shot White tail bucks during the rut and have not noticed an untoward taste.
