I often read in here that the older Remington express 870's were good shotguns but the new ones are not. Does anyone know when this change took place?

I have an 870 express in mossy oak that I bought 13 years ago and it has been flawless (function and finish)... just wondering if the change was after or before 1999?

No idea on date but way before 1999

From what I have heard when Dupont sold the company,in 1993.

More interested in if anyone knows the date.

Sorry I don't buy them so cannot remember exactly. Forget the obvious lower grades of wood and poor exterior metal finshing the very best express ever made does not come even close to having the fit and finish internally of any wingmaster.
But hey what would I know I just have been shooting wingmasters for over 40 years .

According to gunsmiths and fanatic Remington owners which collect only wingmasters and 1100s with fixed chokes only, the Dupont Remi's are better in quality, even the Express was much better, mine was manufactured in 2007(express)and as I have wrote again has the choke crooked.Gladly it shoots where you aim and patterns well though, better then my Benelli and Baikal, still dont like the way the tube sits in the barrel.

That is very true on the wingmasters but even the latest ones are head and shoulders over any express. I have but two in my collection after 1987. Many donot realise remington started playing with choke tubes in 1985 and a few 1100's and 870's were released with a now very rare Briley flat thread tube that is impossible to find. But installation from the factory was hit and miss. They were in mostly special run guns. For example I have a 85 12ga 1100 Ducks unlimited gun with them and a 86 870 DU gun. In 87 rem came out with their own tube which we all know as the rem choke but will not interchange with the original briley. I have had briley actually make me the other tubes at 90.00 a pop since these 85/86 guns only had one IC tube fitted which new.
The wingmasters I have after 87 is I believe are a 2000 and /or 2004 ( have to check my book) The 12ga which I bought just to have a factory wingmaster in 3 1/2" which so many will also argue with you that was never made and the other a 16ga 870 when they were reintroduced with choke tubes.Take care

Here in Greece Remi"s from the Dupont era are hard to find, they have a reputation of wearing a killer barrel the ones with the fixed chokes, thats why they arnt sold, very difficult to find. The ones wearing choke tubes are not favored because of the hit and miss in instalation and because many belive that they dont pattern so well.Despite that Im satisfied with my Remi it gives clean kills, patterns well but the money for a wingmaster I prefer a semi once Im not use to useing a pumper....exept if it was for one of those old Dupont era Remi's LOL

I have a 28 gauge Remington Model 870 Express that I purchased new in 1996 .Never had a seconds problem with it.Shoots well and cycles perfectly. It has a fixed modified choke.

From taking the two apart side by side 28 gauge that doesn't suprise me. It seems remington fitted the same parts in these limited runs of 28 and 410 gauges as they used in the wingmasters.
The internal fits were excellent. I say it was just the wood and bluing that was different in the 28 and 410.
It was the high production guns in 20 and 12ga that you really see the cut backs to reduce costs. take care;)

I purchased this 20 ga. "Special Feild" 870 back in 1989 new, & missed one bird season!

Never a problem in all those years, & quality is fantastic. Best little shotgun I ever had......

Would agree with you on that,Mac.There is no queston that the finish and wood on the outside of the 28 gauge Express shotguns are not as good as the Wingmaster 28 gauge shotguns.

In the past I had two 28 gauge Wingmaster shotguns. Both worked well. Now only have the 28 gauge Express.
