I was at the range today with my newly acquired rem 700vls 223.
This is my first heavy barrel gun.
After how many shots should you give it a rest.
I went through 70 rounds today.
Ive only shot rim fire in that volume.
She gets pretty warm after 15 in a row.

I'm no expert, but I would say if you can't rest your hand on it you should have stopped a few shots ago.

If you leave your finger prints on the barrel when you touch it, it is too hot. I have shot matches in the US where you only have 22 minutes for fire unlimited sighters and 20 rounds for score. With a Palma contour .308 barrel it does get a little to warm to touch.
Some long range benchrest shooters will fire 10 rounds in 30 seconds or less to get all their rounds on target before conditions change.

O.k. I had a good answer for this but......... um, i'm still looking at the dancer chic. Got distracted and forgot what the questions was.......rofl.

Shoot till you see a movement of your point of impact, feel barrell and make a mental note of how warm it is and how many shots it took. This will change with weather conditions and you need to know this so you know when to quit and not effect your scores / groups.
Heat is never a good thing if you can avoid it.

I don't usually shoot more than 5 at a time through the heavy fluted barrel on my 22-250 Savage. More than that, and accuracy isn't what I like it to be.

Fluting a button-rifled barrel is never recommended for this very reason. As that barrel heats up, it changes dimensionally. The preceived benefits and the esthetics come at a cost.
